Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
During the final 18 months of my apprenticeship, I was placed in Operations within the Lean team. No two days were the same, as my work varied with business needs and included projects such as facilitating Kaizen events, drafting business proposals and project-managing equipment purchases, coordinating shop-floor layout changes, and delivering Lean training. I also supported routine activities such as attending daily, weekly, and monthly meetings.
I set aside one day each week to focus on my studies. This involved re-watching the weekly lectures, taking notes, completing coursework, and working on assignments. I also attended termly on-campus days as part of my degree.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I really enjoyed the apprenticeship programme because it gave me the opportunity to experience different roles across the business, including marketing and finance, and helped me identify what I’m passionate about. I found the degree element less engaging as I’m more of a hands-on learner; however, studying alongside working definitely helped, as it allowed me to apply and contextualise what was taught in lectures.
I’m also grateful for the business’s support in allowing me to remain in the Lean team, even though it was originally planned as a nine-month placement. This enabled me to pursue what I enjoyed, build a deeper understanding of the role, and I’m fortunate to have since moved into a permanent position.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
Completing the apprenticeship taught me many new skills, including problem solving, core business tools such as Excel and PowerPoint, data analytics, finance, and training delivery. The degree element also strengthened my academic skills, particularly writing. Overall, the apprenticeship helped me develop softer skills such as leadership and teamwork. One of the biggest areas of growth for me was confidence - when I started the program I was far less confident than when I finished it.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
Overall, the structure was strong and allowed for some flexibility within the apprenticeship. At times, though, the apprenticeship and degree requirements could be confusing - particularly around how the off-the-job hours were organized and recorded.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I’ve had a great deal of support from everyone I’ve worked with. Colleagues have always taken the time to teach me and have consistently given me opportunities to learn, develop, and grow.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
I received vast support from my dedicated apprenticeship coach, who was always available when I needed her and, especially toward the end, helped me get back on track and successfully through my EPA. I also received support from my university lecturers; however, as the degree was mostly delivered online, accessing that support could be challenging at times.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
I feel my degree has helped me develop a stronger understanding of how businesses operate and the key principles behind topics such as leadership styles. A lot of my learning came through writing assignments based on real workplace case studies, which helped me put the theory into context.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
I’ve had many extra-curricular opportunities, including attending apprenticeship events, travelling, and playing for the women’s football team. These experiences have helped me meet new people and expand my network.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Parker Meggitt to a friend?
Yes
Why?
It’s a large business with a lot of opportunities for people early in their careers. I never felt like I was “just an apprentice” - I was trusted with challenging work that helped me learn and develop. I also speak to many people about apprenticeships who say they wish they’d taken a similar route. At times I still get a “pinch me” feeling about my role and the experiences and projects I’ve been able to lead and contribute to, and I don’t think I would have had the same opportunities if I’d followed the traditional university route.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Parker Meggitt?
Do your research on the company beforehand and be confident in your abilities. Some qualities can’t be taught, so make sure you let them shine through during the recruitment process to help you stand out. While grades do matter, many skills can be developed on the job, and employers often value potential and attitude as much as academic results.
Good Luck!
