Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
As an Engineering Technician Apprentice, my role focused on supporting manufacturing operations by identifying and resolving process-related issues to improve performance and reliability. On a day-to-day basis, I investigated production problems, applied structured problem-solving techniques to implement effective corrective actions, and helped prevent recurrence through process improvements. I also used CAD software to design and develop build aids and fixtures that enhanced efficiency, consistency, and throughput on the production floor. In addition, I worked cross-functionally with other departments to coordinate improvements and ensure products and processes consistently met high quality standards.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
Throughout my four-year apprenticeship, I genuinely enjoyed coming into work each day. In my first year, being based at the manufacturing technology centre for training and upskilling made me feel truly invested in and supported, and it gave me a strong foundation to build on. During my second and third years, I had the opportunity to rotate through different departments across the site, which gave me a broad understanding of how the business operates and how each area contributes to overall performance. I especially enjoyed this stage because I was constantly learning something new, taking on fresh challenges, and building strong relationships with colleagues across the organisation.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
During my time at the manufacturing technology centre, I developed two key machining skills: milling and turning. As I moved on site and rotated through different departments, I continued to build my capabilities in a range of areas. In the supply cell, I learned how to use various testing equipment and operate a calendaring machine. While working with the manufacturing engineering team, I gained hands-on experience in moulding processes and producing aircraft parts. I also learned how 3D printing works and how to set up and operate the equipment. Throughout the apprenticeship, I further strengthened my CAD and Excel skills, and every day gave me the opportunity to learn, improve, and take on something new.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
The four-year apprenticeship programme was extremely well organised and clearly structured from the outset. In the first year, I was based full-time at the Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) to complete foundational training. In the second year, this continued through a block-release format, allowing me to build on my learning while gradually increasing my time on site. The programme structure, timelines, and expectations were clearly explained during my induction week at the MTC, which gave me a strong understanding of the pathway ahead.
In my second and third years, the organisation remained consistent and well planned. I was issued a detailed apprenticeship plan that mapped out my rotations across the site, ensuring I gained exposure to all key departments in a logical sequence. Having a clear plan to follow meant each placement had purpose, supported my development, and helped me build a broad, well-rounded understanding of the business.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
Throughout my apprenticeship, I received consistent support from my employer. Regular one-to-one catch-ups ensured I always had the opportunity to discuss my progress, raise any concerns, and get guidance whenever I needed it. My employer also placed strong emphasis on mental health and wellbeing, offering ongoing support through wellbeing weeks and access to dedicated mental health first aiders. In addition, I was provided with specialised equipment where required, helping to ensure I could work safely and reduce the risk of injury. Flexible working was also supported, including the option to work from home one day per week, which helped me balance my workload effectively. Alongside this, my employer offered a range of benefits and schemes that were valuable both in and outside of work, reinforcing how well supported I felt throughout the programme.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
The Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) provided strong, consistent support throughout my apprenticeship. During my first year, the trainers and staff were always available to guide me and ensure I had the help I needed to complete my work to the best of my ability and build confidence in my skills. As the apprenticeship continued, I was supported by an assessor who visited site for regular reviews, checking my progress, discussing my development, and identifying any areas where additional support was needed. In the lead-up to my end-point assessment, I also received ongoing guidance from the Engineering Success Coach, who supported me throughout my preparation and helped ensure I was fully ready for the EPA.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
My qualification through the Manufacturing Technology Centre has helped me perform more effectively in my role by giving me the core skills and technical knowledge I need to work confidently and consistently. It has strengthened my ability to complete my day-to-day tasks to a high standard and apply what I’ve learned directly to real workplace activities.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
During my apprenticeship, I had the opportunity to take part in a wide range of extra-curricular activities. One highlight was attending industry events such as the Farnborough and Paris Airshows, which gave me valuable insight into the aerospace sector and the wider business. Throughout the year, I also had the chance to get involved in fundraising days and community charity projects. In addition, the company ran dedicated wellbeing and sustainability weeks, and there were also sports teams that employees could join, helping to build connections across the site outside of day-to-day work.
