As a Trainee Quantity Surveyor, I support the commercial management of my project by assisting with cost control, valuations, procurement activities and financial reporting. On a day‑to‑day basis, I help gather and analyse cost data, measure site works, support subcontract procurement and maintain commercial records while working closely with the wider project team. The role allows me to develop practical and technical skills alongside my academic studies, supporting my progression towards becoming a fully qualified Quantity Surveyor
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I enjoy my programme as it offers a strong balance between academic study and practical, on‑the‑job learning. The opportunity to apply university knowledge directly to live projects has helped develop my understanding of the Quantity Surveyor role and build confidence in my professional skills. The variety of work and support from experienced colleagues makes the programme both engaging and rewarding,

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I have developed both new and existing skills through my programme. I have strengthened my commercial skills through measuring and valuing works, collating cost data and supporting cost reconciliation activities. I have also developed my understanding of procurement processes, commercial documentation and the use of company systems. In addition, the programme has helped improve my communication, teamwork and time‑management skills by working closely with the wider project team and balancing academic study alongside work responsibilities.

My programme is well organised and structured, with clear expectations and support in place. It follows a defined Quantity Surveying route, allowing me to develop through guided on‑the‑job experience alongside academic study. The structure of the programme supports progressive learning, with work activities aligned to my role as a Trainee Quantity Surveyor and regular guidance from senior commercial team members, which helps ensure steady development and understanding of the role.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

I receive a good level of support from my employer throughout the programme. I work under the guidance of an experienced commercial team, who provide day‑to‑day supervision, advice and feedback. The programme is structured to support development through on‑the‑job learning alongside academic study, with opportunities to ask questions, gain practical experience and progressively take on more responsibility as my skills develop.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

I receive a good level of support from my training provider when working towards my qualifications. In addition to formal academic support, my project team are very supportive and regularly help to brainstorm ideas, discuss alternative approaches and share practical knowledge, which helps me better understand course content and apply it effectively in a live project environment.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

My qualification supports my role very well, as the degree apprenticeship is directly aligned to my day‑to‑day responsibilities and allows me to apply academic learning immediately to live projects, improving my technical understanding, confidence and overall performance as a Trainee Quantity Surveyor.
