Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
Day-to-day my role involves managing tenders by estimating from drawings, communicating with and coordinating subcontractors, and pricing the works before submitting our bid. I also support live projects through variation valuations, payment applications, and commercial reporting, alongside general systems and processes improvements.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I am thoroughly enjoying my role as an apprentice quantity surveyor as I am able to apply the knowledge I gain at university into a real-life working environment. I am exposed to a wide range of experience within the estimating and QSing environment and the work I am involved in is very rewarding. I am excited to continue developing my skills and ultimately finish my degree and become a chartered surveyor.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I have learnt the skill of reading and interpreting construction drawings and been able to apply this when performing take-offs and cost planning using the software Procore. My communication skills are constantly being developed, whether this be liaising with subcontractors, coordinating queries to raise to clients, or writing clear scopes of work. I have also been able to develop my organisational skills by managing my workload, meeting deadlines, and maintaining accurate records.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
AG surveying has been very good with exposing me to different areas of estimating/surveying at a time that is appropriate and aligns with my level of knowledge. The university course is structured in a way where I am able to apply it to the day-to-day-work in the workplace which is useful in building on my knowledge to truly understand concepts that are being taught.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
Throughout my time in the workplace, I am always able to receive the support I seek. Colleagues further along in their apprenticeship are able to offer advice and pass down their knowledge and are always approachable. I also regularly receive support from more senior colleagues, including 1-1 meetings where I am able to raise any concerns that I may have.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
I often have teams meeting with my university mentor to review my knowledge & skills and my off the job hours progress. I am provided with ways to manage my university assignments as well as my physical and mental wellbeing, this also serves as an opportunity to raise any concerns I may have.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
I believe that the content I am learning as part of my study at university is greatly beneficial to my role. It enables me to have a better foundation which I am able to apply to the work I am involved in.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
We often have teams' events such as golf, paintballing, and Christmas events. We go out as a team every Friday for lunch and every Wednesday after work for either badminton or football (depending on the weather). I also make plenty use of the office pool table.
