Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
I manage ecology and structures packages across two section as well as labour only subcontract spanning the whole trace of which I'm the package manager for one. I assess applications for payment, coordinate with site teams and issue payments using Causeway. I produce monthly CVRs, accruals and cash flow forecasts and ensure changes are captured to effectively manage budgets. I use Cemar for contractual correspondence and maintain accurate, auditable records. Additionally, I coordinate ecology CVR meetings, support final accounts, and streamline work processes.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
Absolutely love it, it's a great balance of study and work allowing me to gain real time experience in the role.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I began my apprenticeship straight after finishing school, so all of the skills and experience I demonstrate have been developed through my role. My confidence and leadership abilities have grown significantly as I have taken on greater responsibility within my position. Although I had no prior experience using Excel, using it on a daily basis has allowed my skills to improve rapidly. In addition, my university modules have strengthened my knowledge and play a key role in the day-to-day running of my work, enabling me to apply what I have learned and carry out my duties effectively.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
There is a clear structure with plenty of information outlining my career progression. Any areas of uncertainty can be clarified by speaking with the office team or the early careers team, who are always quick to respond and answer any questions.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I receive plenty of support and constructive feedback, which helps me develop my skills and progress to the next stages of my career.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
They are always just a message or call away. We have PowerPoints and group chats that clearly map out what we are covering in the syllabus, as well as what is planned for the remainder of the apprenticeship.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
While the content isn’t always directly relevant to my day-to-day role in civils, as much of the course is more generic across construction activities, it still provides valuable background knowledge and is helpful in understanding the wider scope of the industry.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
1/5
Social events are rare, and when they do take place they are often too far away to attend. As I work on a joint venture, I sometimes feel detached from BAM. When speaking to friends in other businesses, it seems they have much more to offer socially, whereas here most people leave work and go straight home. I think this is largely due to the project’s location and the differences in age across the team.
I would like to see more informal social activities such as five-a-side football, padel or golf events, run clubs, or simply meeting up outside of work to chat. Currently, activities outside of work tend to only happen when someone is leaving or when a team achievement is celebrated, and even then they are limited by travel and driving commitments. It would be great to see some of the senior team members organising these events, even if only once a month, although it is also something I could potentially help organise myself.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BAM to a friend?
Yes
Why?
BAM provides a strong foundation for starting and developing a career in Quantity Surveying through their QS degree apprenticeship. The programme offers real responsibility alongside academic learning which allows you to gain practical experience in the role while studying. Throughout the course there is consistent support and constructive feedback from both your working and early careers team which helps you develop professionally and build confidence in the role. In sum, BAM creates a supportive environment which encourages growth and progression within the industry.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAM?
I would say to be proactive and willing to learn from day one. Show your hungry to learn and enthusiastic about the industry as well as being open to taking on responsibility as you gain the most development through hands on experience in the role.
