Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
My role as a content creator consists of me creating long from written content our website, GMACS, specifically the blogs, and working closely with the communications team to create content for the social media. The latter is usually video content, and I am usually involved in every aspect of the video creation. From writing the script, filming, presenting and editing.
The content that I am responsible for creating often aligns with wider campaigns, whether its a national event ( National Apprenticeship week) or promoting the our messaging.
Recently I have begun analysing data as a part of role, in addition to the more creative tasks.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I had searched for a creative job role for some time before beginning this role, and I thoroughly enjoy the creative side to job. When I first started, I enjoyed the writing element of my role, however since becoming involved in the video element of the role I know feel that's what I enjoy most of all.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
Yes. Since beginning my role my writing skill has improved with the support of my manager, and his suggestions and the opportunity to write the blog frequently. Overall my knowledge of marketing has improved. I can now create content that caters to the wants and needs of a specific brand, as well as use industry standard tools and techniques to do so, like adobe.
In addition to these skills, I have also learnt how to use tools like google analytics and other SEO tools to track data.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
As I am the first apprentice of this kind within the organisation, there hasn't been as much structure in terms of what the role is in comparison to other apprentice positions. This has had it's positives and negatives.
The benefit of this is that as my course has developed, so has my work. Originally, I feel my role was more copywriting when I began, however as the course requested I develop a variety of skills (e.g videography, analytical) my role has adapted so that I can take responsibility for those tasks.
This has given me the room to grow and discover what it is I truly enjoy doing at my own pace. Especially as both my employer and apprenticeship provided have happy to provide leeway for projects and tasks.
However this has also proven to be challenging, in particular when it comes to the course itself. The lack of structure and organisation with the tasks can leave you feeling unsure if you're progressing, although I did adjust to the less regimental way of working after a few months.
Secondly, I've been employed into the Youth Employment and Skills department, although the content I create is for young people, my role is a communication one, and I do work closely with the team despite being in a different department. But as I am not communication employee I haven't got access to the platforms I know would be helpful to my work. This can be frustrating.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I feel like I am supported by my employer. I have weekly 1-1's with my manager who always makes a point of beginning the conversation by checking in how I'm doing before moving on to discuss work. There is definite regard for how I'm feeling, which I really appreciate. I have also had support when asking for opportunities to develop or with assistance with my work.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
The support I have received from the training provided has been less personalised, although the it has been consistent and I haven't had any issues.
As our coaching sessions are completely virtual there can be a little disconnect between myself and the provider.
I have had coaching call every month, and any issues I've had have been rectified although these have all been relatively minor.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
As the role is so new to the organisation, and the job was effectively that of a copywriter in the first few months, being able to have a criteria I needed to meet for the course has allowed me to develop in my role as I have had to put what I have learnt into practise. I have been able to define what the job role is with the support of the course and all that I have learnt.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
Yes, there is a monthly social payday pints that I try and attend each month. Although there aren't as many other social groups that I have taken part in.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Greater Manchester Combined Authority to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I find working for a public organisation more rewarding in general, and there is a feel within the GMCA that all staff are working toward creating a better society. I have worked in public service sector in different capacities for many years, and the GMCA is by the far the most visionary and considerate of the future.
The support I have received from the colleagues, and it make a difference when you feel genuinely listened to, and your health and wellbeing taken into consideration.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Greater Manchester Combined Authority?
I would implore someone to apply for the GMCA is they had a genuine desire to either build a career for themselves in the public sector, or were passionate about giving back to the community. If I knew someone who was applying for a role I would urge them to read the GMS, research into the organisation and reach out to current employee's where possible for further advice.
