Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
Within my role, I am a senior strategic leader responsible for shaping and delivering Greater Manchester’s economic development and inclusive growth agenda. This includes:
• Leading the development and delivery of major economic strategies, programmes and policies aligned to the Greater Manchester Strategy, with accountability for performance, budgets and workforce management across the Economy portfolio.
• Providing visible senior leadership across GMCA and the wider public service system, representing the organisation with elected members, central government, businesses, universities and international partners.
• Acting as Senior Responsible Owner for complex, multi partner programmes, driving productivity, innovation, business growth, international trade and the social economy.
• Ensuring strong governance, assurance and value for money through evidence based decision making and collaborative delivery models.
• Championing inclusive leadership, organisational development and high performing teams in a political environment.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
The Senior Leader Apprenticeship Postgraduate Diploma in Senior Leadership at the University of Manchester has been fantastic. I particularly appreciate the fact that the lectures are grouped together and run over a few days every few months which has been really helpful for managing my role around the course. Additionally, the cohort is a great mix of people and I have built some lifelong connections which have allowed me to see leadership within a different context.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
The apprenticeship has allowed me to build my skills in senior leadership and also think about leadership through the lens of culture within my workplace which has been invaluable. I have also learnt tools such as how to handle difficult conversations within the workplace. Additionally, the course has given me the space to learn about leadership within specific policy areas / upcoming challenges such as within the digital space with the rollout of AI.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
Overall good, some of the course deadlines have been a bit bunched together which was a challenge. I have also fed back to the university that it would be more useful to ensure that I get feedback on a previous piece of work before the next submission so that I can act on the feedback.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
3/5
My workplace mentor is very engaged but due to a wide range of factors, it has been more challenging to have time during my usual working hours to focus on my apprenticeship.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
The regular TPRMs are really useful and I feel supported to get ready for my end point assessment. Overall, the University of Manchester has been a great provider for this apprenticeship.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
The course has helped me to be a more consistent and considerate leader. I have also used the tools learned through the course to facilitate better collaboration across the directorate.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
Yes, my workplace offers a wide range of networks and social groups
