Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
I work as an Apprentice Project Engineer, supporting the delivery of the projects from initial scoping through to completion. My role involves liaising with sub contractors to obtain quotes and coordinate with internal teams to plan and arrange works on site. I regularly attend site to carry out scoping surveys, monitor progress and ensure works are being carried out an delivered safely and efficiently. I review risk assessments and technical drawings to support project planning and compliance. I also assist with the project closeout and capitalisation processes. Part of my role is to provide the Project Managers with technical support in the project such as developing practical solutions for issues presented by clients and being involved in activities such as electrical fault finding to help further grow my technical knowledge. Alongside my engineering responsibilities, I'm a STEM ambassador and I take part in STEM activities/ events. In addition to this, I am also involved in organising work experiences such as the UK Junior water prize work experience held by Severn Trent, Avove, COWI and Dalcour Maclaren. I also help arrange a community day each year for the apprentices to volunteer. And attend women in engineering events to understand ways I can support other women in engineering.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I really enjoy this programme as it allows me to learn at college and directly apply that knowledge in a practical work environment. I find that I often learn best on the job, so the combination of study and hands-on experience works perfectly for my development and growth in the role. I have felt consistently supported throughout my apprenticeship particularly by my work place Avove, as well as my training provider Train'dUp. I am always guided and encouraged to learn and grow. The Avove culture and values create an excellent environment for young people to grow, with continuous mentoring and support from those around you.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I have developed strong communication and organisational skills through working with contractors, internal teams and sub contractors. I've also built technical skills in review risk assessments, interpreting drawings, and supporting electrical fault finding. Attending site regularly has improved my practical understanding of projects. Additionally being a Stem ambassador and organising work experiences and volunteer days has helped me grow in confidence, teamwork and leadership.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
The programme is very well organised and structured, with a good balance between college learning and practical work. I have college every week on Tuesdays and once a month I have an additional college class on Wednesday for my project controls session. I tend to go office once a week sometimes twice and I go to site 1-2 times a week and work from home 2 times a week. It's all a really good balance and I manage to get everything done and be productive without feeling burnout as I have the option to work from home so it saves me the travelling which can often cause further tiredness. Also in the programme there is clear guidance throughout, and both my training provider and employer ensure everything is well planned and easy to follow.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I receive a high level of support from my employer. I am always guided, encouraged and given opportunities to develop with strong mentoring from my team. My careers manger regularly checks up on my progress and if I have any issues. My manager is always giving me opportunities and my mentor dedicates a lot of time to ensure I understand the processes and the work I am given.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
My training provider Train'dUp has been very supportive throughout my apprenticeship, providing clear guidance and helping me stay on track with my studies. They ensure that if I need extra support I receive it, whether that's feedback or extra time or the assignment deadlines. I also have regular reviews to discuss my progress which help me improve my learning. The tutors are easy to contact and provide support at all times.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
My qualification supports my role well, as I can apply what I learn at college directly into my day-today work, improving my understanding and performance. It also ensures that I remember the things that I learn as I immediately put them into practice rather than just learning.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
Yes there are many great activities available. I am involved in the STEM programme where I volunteer and have part in STEM workshops, activities and events. I also help arrange work experiences such as the UK Junior water prize alongside Severn Trent. I am also responsible for organising the company community day for myself and the other apprentices. And I am also a part of the women in Avove programme where we listen and work on ways to help, support and encourage other women in the business.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Avove to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I have done work placements at a few engineering companies and Avove is by far the best in terms of their company culture, constantly supporting their early apprentices and ensuring there are always resources and support systems to accommodate for each the apprentices situation and requirements. The careers manager, line managers and senior leadership teams are all dedicated in supporting the apprentices growth in the business and also recognise us as the future of the business.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Avove?
I would advise to do your research, although Avove is a great fit for myself that may not be the case for everyone. I would recommend having a look at the company website to see what Avove actually do and if that interests you, I would also look into their values and reach out to current apprentices on LinkedIn if you have any questions or just want to get an insight into what its like to be an apprentice at Avove. You can also have a look on LinkedIn or Avove Instagram at the different things the apprentices are involved in to get an idea.
