Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
I am now cost managing two projects, I submit early warning and compensation events to both subcontractor and main contract, I build up fee's and prices for new work (mainly through PMI's) I create time sheets for all workers on the two projects. I create and send payment applications and when new work comes in I make work orders.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I love my programme I get to feel independent with my work, while still being able to ask for advice and help, my mentor works closely with me to ensure all my work is corrected but also allows me time for my university work.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I have I am much better with excel, my communication skills have improved as well as time management. My key knowledge of construction and contract management has also increased a lot since the beginning of my apprenticeship.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
It is really good within the company I have a monthly call with the early carers manager and have frequent messages about the programme and if I am okay at work (both mental/ physical wellbeing) and we have a three month programme me and my manager submit to the company. We have a meeting before and discuss where I excel and where I need to grow my confidence and knowledge in.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I do not just from my manager and mentor but the since I have started I have worked alongside my whole team, both getting taught and do small tasks with them. For example writing up work orders, I have only done one before alongside my mentor. So when another QS in my office was making one they walked me through the process and let me independently create it, then went back and gave me feedback so I could learn from my mistakes.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
Really good as well, I get on day off a week, of my choosing, that I can spend at home or in the office towards my university work. But when I had my first exams my manager said that I could have an extra day to help me prepare. When I have assignments, I can always go to people in my office, like when I had a design drawing for university to make I sat down with a designer who showed me what I should do while explaining it to me.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
It each's me not how to perform my role but actually understand why everything needs to be done, as I work in utilities I believed that the job was digging a meter in the ground and then putting in pipe. But I didn't get why it was so important or all the work outside of commercial do, until my university taught me in depth. Also it doesn't show just one sector of construction it teaches us everything so in the future I wont have to just stick to utilities but I can go further.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
I am on the social pipeline committee at work, which organises events for my office so people spend more time together and gives a chance for those who work at home to be a part of the fun.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Avove to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Obviously the pay is incredible for an apprenticeship, but you do get amazing experience and knowledge as a real quantity surveyor I do all my jobs, may be on a lower scale to other QS's, but I still have great knowledge and understanding. Especially in such a small amount of time, I ave been here in six months and have progressed very fast as I has little to no experience or knowledge in this area.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Avove?
During your interview aim to be very happy and good at communication as everyone in the office are good friends and they are looking for those whole will fit in rather then just your intelligence and work experience.
