Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
I work as an Apprentice Engineer on a major infrastructure project, supporting the engineering team with planning and delivery of works. My role involves assisting with RAMS (Risk Assessments and Method Statements), reviewing drawings and plans, and helping ensure works are carried out safely and in line with design and site requirements.
On a day-to-day basis, I liaise with engineers and site teams, support coordination of activities, and help keep documentation organised and up to date. This role is helping me build a strong understanding of engineering processes, safety, and project delivery.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
3/5
To be honest, I haven’t fully enjoyed all aspects of the programme, as I’ve realised that engineering isn’t necessarily the career path best suited to me. However, I still recognise the value of the experience, as it has helped me develop transferable skills such as teamwork, communication, organisation, and working within a professional environment.
Overall, while I may not see myself continuing in this area long-term, the programme has still been beneficial in helping me understand my strengths and career direction.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
Yes, I have developed a range of both new and existing skills throughout the programme. I’ve improved my communication and teamwork by working closely with engineers and site teams, and I’ve become more confident in a professional environment.
I’ve also developed organisational and time management skills through handling documentation and supporting project coordination. In addition, I’ve gained a better understanding of RAMS, drawings, and how engineering works are planned and carried out safely on site.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
2/5
The organisation of my programme has improved over time. In the earlier stages, it was not very well structured, which made it difficult to stay on track and fully understand what was expected.
However, since having more consistent support and clearer management of my apprenticeship, it has become much more organised and structured. This has made a big difference in helping me progress, stay focused, and complete my work more effectively.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
3/5
I receive a good level of support from my employer now. While support was limited at the beginning of my apprenticeship, it has improved significantly over time with clearer guidance and more consistent management.
I am now able to ask for help when needed and receive support with my development and workload, which has made it easier to stay on track and progress through my programme.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
I receive a reasonable level of support from my training provider. Overall, it has been helpful in working towards my qualifications, with clear teaching and guidance when needed.
There have been times where support could have been more consistent, but generally I have been able to get the help required to complete my work and progress through the course.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
I feel that my qualification has supported my understanding of basic engineering principles and given me a foundation to build on in my role. It has helped me better understand drawings, terminology, and how projects are structured.
However, much of what I have learned in my role has come from hands-on experience on site, so while the qualification has been useful, the practical side of the apprenticeship has had a greater impact on my day-to-day performance.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
There are opportunities to get involved in additional activities, mainly through extra training and qualifications required for working in certain areas on site. These include safety and competency-based training, which support both personal development and the requirements of the role.
While there are some social and networking opportunities, the main focus within my role has been on gaining the necessary training and certifications to work safely and effectively in restricted or specialised environments.
