Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
I work within the BBC Proms Press team, supporting the promotion of the festival across media and digital platforms. My role involves helping to organise press events, managing RSVPs and guest lists, and assisting with the coordination of logistics. On a day-to-day basis, I also support press activity by responding to enquiries and contributing ideas for social media content to help raise awareness of the Proms and engage audiences. I work closely with colleagues across the press and wider Proms teams to ensure communications are well organised and delivered effectively.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
3/5
I enjoy my programme overall and find the role engaging and valuable, particularly in developing practical workplace skills and understanding how my team operates. However, I have found it challenging that there is limited support for gaining placements or experience outside of my core team. As apprentices are expected to spend the duration of the programme in one area, it can be difficult to gain exposure to different parts of the business, which in turn makes evidencing certain KSBs and completing university work more challenging without broader experience.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
I have learnt and developed a range of skills through the programme, including organisation, communication and supporting press and promotional activity. I have also built confidence in professional environments and improved my ability to manage competing priorities. However, due to limited movement between teams, much of this development has come from my own initiative, using existing contacts and actively making new ones to gain broader experience. While this has helped me develop independence and proactivity, more structured support for placements or cross-team exposure would make it easier to further develop and evidence all required KSBs.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
2/5
While the overall framework of the apprenticeship is clear, in practice there is limited structure around placements, movement between teams, and how apprentices are supported to gain the breadth of experience needed. Being based in one team for the duration of the programme can make it difficult to fully evidence certain KSBs and complete university work without broader exposure. As a result, much of the structure has relied on personal initiative rather than a consistent, well-supported programme design.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
I receive a strong level of support from my employer, particularly from the BBC as an organisation and from the team leaders and managers I have worked with, who are consistently approachable, encouraging and invested in my development. The BBC clearly values apprentices and provides a positive, inclusive working environment where support is readily available at a team level. While support from the apprenticeships team has been less visible in my second year compared to earlier in the programme, the day‑to‑day guidance and encouragement from managers and colleagues across the BBC has remained a real strength of my experience.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
I receive a very high level of support from my training provider when working towards my qualifications. They are consistently helpful, approachable and willing to put the time in to support my learning. I feel well guided through my coursework and assessments, and confident that I can ask for help whenever it’s needed, which has made managing my studies alongside work much more achievable.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
I feel that my qualification supports me well in performing my role. The learning from my training provider helps me develop transferable skills such as communication, organisation and reflective working, which I can apply directly in my day-to-day work. It has also helped me better understand professional working practices and how to evidence my development against the required standards. While some elements would benefit from being supported by broader on-the-job experience across different teams, overall the qualification has strengthened my confidence and capability in my role.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
Yes, there are lots of extra‑curricular activities to get involved in at work. The BBC offers a wide range of opportunities, including professional networking events and talks with external companies such as Warner Bros, which provide valuable industry insight. There are also strong internal communities, such as the apprentice community, that offer social events, peer support and networking opportunities. These activities help build connections across the organisation, develop professional skills and create a real sense of community beyond day‑to‑day roles.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BBC to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I would recommend the BBC to a friend because it is a supportive, inclusive organisation that genuinely invests in people and their development. There are excellent opportunities to learn, build professional skills and connect with others across the business, including access to networking events, internal communities and industry‑leading projects. The culture encourages creativity, collaboration and initiative, and working at the BBC offers valuable experience within a respected, globally recognised organisation.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BBC?
I would advise others applying to the BBC to be themselves throughout the application process and let their genuine interests and personality come through. Don’t be discouraged if you’re not successful the first time. I was not accepted first time applying, and persistence paid off. It’s also really important to understand and reflect the BBC’s values in your application, as these are central not only to working at the BBC but to how the wider industry operates. Showing how your values align with this can make a real difference.
