Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
On a day-to-day basis, my role includes assisting with cost management and financial control on live developments. This involves helping to track project costs against budgets, updating cost value reconciliations (CVRs), and supporting monthly reporting to ensure forecasts reflect current site progress and commercial risks.
I regularly assist with the valuation and payment process, including reviewing subcontractor applications for payment, comparing them against work completed on site, and helping to prepare payment recommendations. This requires close coordination with site managers and subcontractors to ensure valuations are accurate and aligned with programme progress.
A key part of my role is supporting procurement activities. This includes helping to prepare tender enquiries, analysing subcontractor quotations, and assisting with the placement of subcontract orders under supervision. Through this, I gain exposure to supply chain management and understand how commercial decisions are made to achieve best value while maintaining quality and programme requirements.
I am also involved in variation management and cost control, where I assist in assessing variations, tracking changes to scope, and ensuring any cost implications are properly recorded and agreed. This helps minimise commercial risk and avoid budget overruns.
Regular communication and coordination are essential parts of my role. I attend site meetings, liaise with construction teams, and support the commercial team with general administration, record keeping, and document control. This ensures information is accurate, up to date, and accessible for audits and reporting purposes. Through my role as a Commercial Trainee, I am developing:
A strong understanding of commercial processes within residential construction
Practical experience in cost control, valuations, and subcontractor management
Improved communication skills through working with site teams, consultants, and subcontractors
The ability to manage multiple tasks while meeting deadlines and commercial priorities
Overall, the role provides a well-rounded foundation in commercial management within the housebuilding sector and supports my progression towards a career as a Quantity Surveyor within Vistry Group.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I thoroughly enjoy the apprenticeship programme and am highly satisfied with the experience so far. I have found it both rewarding and engaging, as it provides a strong balance between practical, on-the-job experience and structured learning. The time and commitment invested in my development have been clear, with consistent support from my colleagues, manager, and the wider commercial team.
The programme has allowed me to develop my technical knowledge, confidence, and practical skills within a real working environment, which I find extremely valuable. I feel well supported in my learning and progression, and I am motivated by the opportunities the apprenticeship provides for long-term development within the company. Overall, I am very grateful for the investment in my growth and genuinely enjoy being part of the programme.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
Through my role as a Commercial Trainee, I have developed a range of key commercial and technical skills. I have gained experience in cost management, including tracking costs against budgets, assisting with CVRs, and developing an understanding of cost control and financial reporting.
I have also built strong knowledge in procurement, supporting tender enquiries, reviewing subcontractor quotations, and assisting with placing subcontract orders. This has improved my understanding of supply chain management and commercial decision-making.
By assisting with monthly subcontractor payments, I have developed surveying skills such as valuing completed works, reviewing payment applications, liaising with site teams, and supporting payment notices. This has strengthened my attention to detail, communication skills, and ability to work to deadlines.
Additionally, I have developed practical measurement and surveying skills using software such as Bluebeam, including carrying out digital take-offs, marking up drawings, and identifying variations. This has enhanced my ability to interpret technical drawings and work efficiently using industry-standard tools.
Overall, these experiences have contributed significantly to my progression within the commercial and quantity surveying profession.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
The programme is very well organised and clearly structured. From the outset, the structure has been set out transparently, making expectations and progression easy to understand. A key feature of this is having every Thursday allocated as a working‑from‑home day dedicated to online learning through my apprenticeship provider, LSP, which provides consistent time to focus on learning and development alongside work commitments.
This clear routine helps balance on-the-job experience with academic study effectively, ensuring neither aspect is overlooked. Overall, the programme runs very smoothly, with good planning, clear communication, and strong support in place, which has made the experience highly positive and easy to engage with.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I receive a high level of support from my employer. I have both internal and external progress review meetings, where my development is regularly reviewed and discussed. These meetings provide a valuable opportunity to reflect on my progress, identify areas for improvement, and receive constructive feedback to support my learning.
As part of this support, we also work on setting out a clear career progression plan, where targets and goals are discussed and aligned with where I aspire to be in the future. This gives me clear direction and motivation, as I understand what is required at each stage of my development.
In addition to formal reviews, the colleagues I work with are very supportive and always make time to help, answer questions, and share their experience. This creates a positive learning environment and makes me feel well supported on a daily basis.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
I receive a high level of support from my training provider, LSP, while working towards my qualifications. They provide a wide range of learning resources and software that are easy to access and extremely useful for both study and day‑to‑day work.
We are provided with handouts, files, and recorded videos, which are regularly shared and can be referenced at any time. These resources are valuable working tools that support my understanding and can be used daily to reinforce learning.
I also have open and regular access to my tutor, who is always available to contact for guidance and support whenever needed. This ensures that help is readily available and that any questions or challenges can be addressed quickly.
In addition, formative feedback is consistently provided on submitted work. This clearly highlights what has been done well and where improvements can be made, allowing me to continuously develop and refine my work to a high-quality standard. Overall, the level of support from LSP has been excellent and plays a key role in my ongoing development.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
Surveying, quantifying, measuring, and estimating are all regularly occurring topics throughout my course, and they strongly support the work I carry out in my day‑to‑day role. These core skills are embedded within the training and are continuously revisited, which helps to reinforce both my technical understanding and practical application.
The knowledge gained through these topics directly aligns with my daily responsibilities, such as measuring works, reviewing drawings, assessing quantities, supporting valuations, and understanding cost implications. Being taught these areas consistently allows me to apply what I learn immediately in the workplace, strengthening my accuracy, confidence, and efficiency.
Overall, the strong focus on surveying, quantification, measurement, and estimating within the course plays a key role in supporting my performance and development, as they mirror the skills I use regularly as part of my role in the commercial and quantity surveying environment.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
Yes, there are plenty of extra‑curricular activities to get involved in at work. We regularly receive newsletters and event invitations that highlight a wide range of opportunities across the business, which helps keep everyone engaged and involved beyond day‑to‑day work.
These activities include charity and fitness events such as Tough Mudder, the London Marathon, and charity football matches played regionally against other Vistry offices. There are also golf days and social outings, which provide a great way to network, build relationships, and enjoy time with colleagues in a relaxed setting.
Overall, Vistry offers a lot of exciting and enjoyable opportunities outside of work tasks. These events create a strong sense of community, make the workplace more enjoyable, and genuinely give you something to look forward to when coming into work.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Vistry to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I would recommend Vistry to a friend because it is a genuinely supportive and engaging place to work that invests heavily in people’s development. The company provides clear career progression opportunities, structured training, and strong support through both on‑the‑job learning and external development programmes such as apprenticeships.
Vistry also has a very positive working culture. Colleagues are approachable, supportive, and always willing to make time to help, which makes it a great environment to learn and grow—especially early in your career. There is a strong sense that your development and well‑being matter, not just your output.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Vistry?
My main advice to anyone wanting to join Vistry would be to show a strong willingness and eagerness to learn. Technical skills and detailed knowledge are things that will be developed over time through training and on‑the‑job experience, so they are not expected from day one.
The most important qualities of an aspiring trainee are enthusiasm, dedication and a proactive attitude. Being willing to get stuck in, ask questions, and show genuine curiosity about the role and the business makes a real difference. Vistry provides excellent support and development opportunities, so those who are motivated, receptive to learning and committed to growing will gain the most from the experience.
