Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
My role is as a Cyber Security Degree Apprentice and comprises of being a security consultant to clients across the industry in different sectors such as Energy, Finance, Government and Engineering. My role involves working for CGI 4 days a week and contributing one day to university. The modules I learn at university translates into my work and gives me a good idea for when I work on different projects at CGI that involve different technologies and skills. I'm a hybrid worker so I work from the office and at home every week. When I'm not on client calls, I'm usually busy completing a task that is set by my line manager for review either the same week or the following week. My day-to-day is exciting and always full of new challenges that allow you to grow as an individual.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I massively enjoy my programme as it allows me to gain industry experience which I usually would not gain by going the traditional route of just university. It also allows me to stay out of student debt as its fully funded by CGI. Thirdly, I'm also earning a salary on the side which is a great bonus to have as an individual still studying at university. Fourthly, this programme allows me to meet a diverse range of people from the industry from all walks of life which have the same passion for cyber security as me and allows for a good amount of networking. Lastly, what I love about being on this programme is the flexibility and culture of home working as its not seen as a negative thing as long as work is being completed on time and to an acceptable standard and culture wise, the people at CGI are very friendly and approachable for asking any questions or needing any advice.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I have developed many skills such as communication, attention to detail, teamwork and organisation. These skills have been developed whilst on my project rotations for different clients with communication being the biggest one as I had to convey technical information to non-technical stakeholders in a way that they could understand. For attention to detail, this was developed by the range of documents I was given to read to check for any errors or incorrect information. My teamwork skills improved as I worked as part of a team on these projects to deliver on deliverables for the client and for us to be synchronised while working. In terms of organisation, I had to make sure that this information was securely stored and kept in an organised repository for easy access by authorised individuals and doing this consistently, developed this skill tremendously.
With regards to new skills, I would say that initiative and resilience are definitely skills that I have got from the different types work I've been doing at the moment. The skill initiative has come into play as I've not had to be asked to do certain things as they have become second nature to do whilst working for CGI. Lastly, resilience I would say has been built through the projects I have been on so far as they have been quite challenging and required a no quit mindset to get through them.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
I would say that my programme has been relatively organised/structured so far with some hiccups in the beginning but were quickly remediated to make the programme enjoyable. CGI will require you to work 4 days a week as an employee and one day a week towards university if you join as a degree apprentice. Depending on the university chosen or arranged for by CGI, you may notice that the structure/organisation is not perfect but please be assured that our apprenticeship representative will fix those issues immediately and accordingly.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I receive ample support from CGI on my programme with me having a cyber guide who checks up on me and ask me about how the programme is going so far for me and, I have a buddy that gives me advice, help with any questions I have and is there to help me out university wise. I also have a mentor that is currently helping me out when it comes to knowledge and experience exposure so that I'm constantly moving with the field of cyber security. If you want support from an employer, I'd highly recommend CGI.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
I would say the support from the training provider is not as strong as the employer but is definitely there for people who need it whether you have a disability or learning needs that need to be catered for on the apprenticeship programme. There is an apprenticeship manager that will set up tripartite meetings with you, CGI and her/him being present to discuss your progress so far at the university and any areas that are identified for improvement. There are several contacts at the university which you can reach out to via the platform Aptem or on the university website via the contact page.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
It helps because it maps to what I'm doing at work through my modules in terms of knowledge which I may need for future project I'm on and the soft skills I gain from the qualification I'm currently completing. The apprenticeship links with the apprenticeship standard and many duties from that standard via the cyber security route maps to what I've being on the project rotations. The qualification you take will align with what you are doing at work.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
Yes there are a plethora of extra-curricular activities you can engage in through our social platform at CGI. We are partnered with organisations that also cater to professional networking events and we also do them at several of our offices around the UK. There is something for everyone when it comes to activities and there is no reason to miss out.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend CGI to a friend?
Yes
Why?
A great organisation to work for especially for early career starters as there is a range of things we offer at CGI. Also, the culture of the people here is very friendly and supportive of others which will allow you to strive in the industry. Moreover, there are a variety of opportunities to learn and have fun with regards to social activities and projects of a secret nature that help better society.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to CGI?
I would say be yourself and don't put on a front as your natural self definitely will display better during the application process. I would also say do your research on what CGI is all about as coming to an interview with no facts about CGI can hurt your chances of being hired. Furthermore, if you have any connections to CGI, I would draw on them as they can tell you more about their personal experience at CGI and help you for when you go through the application process. Lastly, during the application process, I would say don't rush to give an answer if you've not properly thought it through as the answer many not be as strong as you would want it to be so, take your time as there is no rush.
