Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
As an Assistant Quantity Surveyor (AQS), I support the commercial and financial management of construction projects from start to finish. The role sits between the delivery team on site and the commercial team in the office, helping to make sure projects are completed within budget, on time, and to the required quality. It’s a great role for someone who likes working with numbers, problem‑solving, and being involved in real construction projects, while also developing strong commercial and professional skills.
Day to Day, I do the following:
- Help track costs and prepare valuations
- Assist with pricing works and reviewing subcontractor quotes
- Measure quantities from drawings (take‑offs)
- Support payments, variations, and cost reports
- Work closely with site teams and subcontractors
- Learn on live projects while working towards qualifications
Why It’s Good for Apprentices
- Real project experience from day one
- Mix of office work, site visits, and learning
- Clear progression into a Quantity Surveyor role
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I really enjoy the programme. It gives me the chance to learn while working on real projects, apply what I’m taught straight away, and develop professionally alongside experienced colleagues. The balance between on‑the‑job learning and formal study keeps the role engaging and motivating.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
Yes – I’ve learnt new skills and developed existing ones through the programme.
New skills: I’ve gained practical experience in cost management, valuations, measuring works from drawings, and understanding how construction contracts operate on live projects.
Developed skills: My confidence, communication, organisation, and problem‑solving skills have improved, especially through working with site teams and subcontractors. I’ve also strengthened my commercial awareness and attention to detail.
Overall, the programme has helped me grow both technically and professionally by applying learning directly to real projects.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
The programme is well organised and structured. There’s a clear balance between workplace learning and formal study, with defined support from both the employer and training provider. Tasks and responsibilities increase gradually as skills develop, which makes it easy to track progress and build confidence over time.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I receive a high level of support from my employer. I’m supported by my line manager and the wider commercial team, who are always available to offer guidance, answer questions, and review my work. I’m given time and encouragement to complete my studies alongside my role, and there are regular check‑ins to make sure I’m progressing and developing confidence in my responsibilities.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
I receive strong and consistent support from my training provider while working towards my qualifications. They provide clear guidance on coursework and assessments, regular check‑ins to track progress, and are always available to answer questions or offer help when needed. This support makes it easier to balance work and study and ensures I stay on track throughout the programme.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
I feel that my qualification strongly supports my performance in my role. The knowledge gained through my training provider directly links to day‑to‑day tasks, such as cost management, valuations, and commercial reporting. Being able to apply what I learn in real time helps deepen my understanding, build confidence, and carry out my responsibilities more effectively on site and in the office.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
Yes, there are opportunities to get involved beyond day‑to‑day work. This can include social events and team activities that help build relationships across the business, as well as professional and networking events that support career development. These activities encourage collaboration, help you feel part of the wider team, and make the workplace more enjoyable and engaging.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Vistry to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I would recommend Vistry to a friend because it offers strong support, clear career development, and a positive working environment. The business invests in training and professional growth, particularly through apprenticeship programmes, and encourages learning on real, live projects. There’s a good team culture, approachable management, and genuine opportunities to progress while gaining valuable industry experience.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Vistry?
I’d recommend:
Be yourself and show enthusiasm – Vistry values people who are genuinely interested in construction and keen to learn, not just those with experience.
Research the company and role – understanding what Vistry does and how the apprenticeship or role fits into the business really helps.
Be open to learning – you won’t be expected to know everything, but a positive attitude and willingness to ask questions go a long way.
Show good organisation and commitment – balancing work and study is important, so demonstrating time management skills is a big plus.
Overall, showing motivation, professionalism, and a strong work ethic will make you stand out.
