Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

My role as an apprentice HGV mechanic for DAF trucks involves me attending both the work place and college in block release. I am mainly in the workshop where I get to undertake multiple different tasks each day which are always challenging and exciting. I get to go to the new facility in Nottingham where we are taught the more technical/terminology for the stuff we do at the workshop. Day to day I’m always learning and being giving mew exciting and challenging activities.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I have had the opportunity to work a few different jobs in my work career so far. This has to be the best by far I’ve done. I’m always enjoying the working environment with its challenges ad try my best to take in as much information as I can. I feel supported and challenged which enables me to feel like I am always making progress.
Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I’m always learning new skills each day in my job and then I get to go to college to reinforce what I’ve learnt in writing aiding my academic journey. I’ve always worked with my hands and feel like I’m only getting better. My confidence has grown a lot since starting this job.
Structure and Support
How well organised/structured is your programme?

I really like the way the course has been layed out from the beginning. It’s all been really clearly communicated and I’ve never felt in the dark. I know when I’m next due at college. Exactly where I am in terms of my progress and where I’m expected to be.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

My employer has been aiding me in everything I do. I have multiple different outlets to communicate with to get questions answered. I always feel like I have had more than enough support on my journey so far.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

My training provider works extremely close to my employer so I’ve never felt anything less that the level of support and help I’ve had from my employer.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

I’ve felt more confident in carrying out the daily tasks in the workplace safely and confidently. I also feel like I am more aware of why we are doing the things we do at the workplace.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

There is always something on to get involved with. Charity events, skill days, competitions and other event days. My employer is always looking for someone to get involved.

Why?
I’ve found this to be an amazing enriching experience that has provided me with loads of skills for inside the trade and outside. I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity and support in gaining the qualification I will receive at the end of the apprenticeship.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to DAF Trucks UK?
My tips would be to try and standout as much as you can and show as much enthusiasm as you can. Daf trucks is incredibly supportive and helpful and all they want is someone who is keen to learn and get involved in all they have to offer.
