Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

I filter through data gathered from and given by various sources, removing what is unnecessary or actively harmful to analysis and visualise what the data says using Power BI. I clean the data, I work with it to find conclusions, I automate what I can and then I send it to the parties or places where they will be used.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I really love working with data, and even though it can be incredibly awkward at times with the styles different teams sort and formulate their data, I wouldn't change what I do for the world. Plus, they allow me plenty of time for study and training!
Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I have developed my existing Power BI skills from being a relative novice, who had used Power BI, but did not know it in-depth yet, to being able to comfortably use it to show what I need to show and the best formats for it. Additionally, I am more proficient with DAX queries in Power BI and with writing formulae in Excel to automate or simplify my work and processes, minimalising the chance for human error
Structure and Support
How well organised/structured is your programme?

Although the official university portion of my programme hasn't yet started, my line manager and the team around me have all endeavoured to teach me what they can and to ensure I am capable in my day-to-day working. My onboarding with both my workplace and with Teesside University have also been great, despite some minor hiccups here and there.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

My employer has offered me a world of support, including subsidising all of my travel from my Sunderland home into the office in Redcar (which is not a cheap trip). They have even made efforts to make the journey home better for me, and to make sure any worries or struggles are met with true support and assistance!
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

Grant Thornton and Teesside University have both tried their hardest to support me whilst we were going through onboarding, including answering any queries or quandaries I have had regarding exact times, locations and time-frames. I also have a tutor from the university who can support me in the future.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

As I do not have the qualification itself yet, I do not feel at liberty to truly answer, but given what I know if the course and qualification so far, it will help me tremendously in my work, and hopefully will allow me to improve the business as a whole.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

Yes, there are a ton of extra-curricular activities, from larger networking events with the business to smaller events for those on our project, there is no shortage of events to help with everyone getting to know each other better and to enjoy our time together.

They're a very supportive workplace with a ton of lovely, lively people who are all willing to help where they can and support when they can, or to just have a bit of a natter in the tea room.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Balfour Beatty?
Be open and yourself. Sell what you can do and what you want to be able to do. Show a drive to improve, work and learn, and Balfour Beatty will meet that head-on and give you all the support you need to eventually thrive.
