Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
Timesheets - creating & submitting weekly manhours to project customer
Exception reporting - identifying & standardising job roles/titles within multiple systems
Business Improvement - identifying areas that could potentially be improved by using digital resources
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I have been at Balfour Beatty for just under 5 weeks and yet to start my course, AI & Digital Skills for Business Impact, at Teesside University in partnership with Grant Thornton. However, I am currently enjoying working alongside the digital & reporting team, picking up what I can and researching the NZT Project. I feel very positive about the future of my position and working with Balfour Beatty.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
Although I only started my role just over a month ago, I feel that I have already learned new skills that I will continue to use and develop within my day-to-day tasks. My previous position as an administrator enabled me to attain communication skills which I am excited to develop at Balfour Beatty by liaising with both internal and external stakeholders at a new level.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
The onboarding process has been very positive - I have received consistent communication from both the apprenticeship team at Teesside University (TU) and the training provider, Grant Thornton. A virtual meeting was held by Grant Thornton to discuss the course in detail and provide further clarification on the course modules; an initial assessment with TU was also put in place to ensured that this course is the right option for me and my aspirations.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
My experience working for Balfour Beatty so far has been great! The company has a very high level of communication across the business as a whole and the individual projects; they offer multiple team-building & welfare events, as well as a range of online webinars. My Line Manager is very keen to support myself and my fellow apprentice on both a professional and personal level.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
I am yet to start my course with Grant Thornton/Teesside University but the introduction stage has given me confidence that the relationship will be maintained.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
The discovery session with Grant Thornton gave me great confidence that the skills and knowledge that I will be learning throughout the AI & Digital Skills for Business Impact course will benefit and support both myself and the business. As the course is split into four modules, two dedicated to Data Analysis and two for Business Improvement, I believe that the qualification that I will obtain will have a huge impact on my day-to-day work and the digital development at Balfour Beatty.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
There has already been so many opportunities where team members can collaborate and learn more about one another. Well-being activities such as a monthly walks & friendly table tennis competitions have been held; as well as an International Women's Day Event where female colleagues could have a discussion and support one another and a Red Nose Day bake sale.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Balfour Beatty to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Especially now that Balfour Beatty has been awarded the Net Zero Teesside Project, there has been a significant increase in the number of jobs available in the North East and because they also have an Early Careers Team and are a proud member of the 5% Club, there are much more opportunities for young people who are eager to get onto the career ladder. As Balfour Beatty offer a number of employee benefits, support systems and truly live by their Cultural Framework, it is a great place to work.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Balfour Beatty?
My advice would be to conduct research on the business, show that you are excited about the prospect of working for the company. Be honest about your skill set, don't be afraid that you may not currently have all the knowledge and credentials as Balfour Beatty takes pride in developing their employees and learning on the job. Lastly, be yourself! The company has an idea of who they wish to employ, that your personal morals and aspirations line up with theirs as a business; they want to see someone who is eager to succeed as an individual and support the company to reach their goals.
