Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
In my role as a Degree Apprentice Quantity Surveyor, I support the commercial team with day‑to‑day cost management, updating reports, and reviewing subcontractor payments. I measure works from drawings, help with pricing variations, and assist in preparing procurement documents. I regularly visit site to monitor progress and ensure claims reflect the work completed. Alongside this, I’m continuously developing my knowledge through university studies and by shadowing senior QSs to build my professional skills.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I really enjoy my role as a Degree Apprentice Quantity Surveyor — I’d rate my overall satisfaction at 4 out of 5. I find the work engaging, especially the mix of cost management, site visits, and hands‑on learning. The balance between practical experience and university study keeps me motivated, and I feel I’m developing valuable skills that genuinely support my career. There’s still plenty to learn, but that’s part of what makes the role rewarding.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
From my time as a Commercial Apprentice, I’ve developed strong administrative and commercial skills. I’ve learned how to manage documents, support commercial processes, and work confidently with internal systems. My communication skills have improved through daily interaction with colleagues and suppliers, and I’ve become much more organised, independent, and capable of handling multiple tasks at once. I’m also building a solid understanding of how different departments work together in a commercial environment.

Would you recommend Balfour Beatty to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I would recommend Balfour Beatty because it’s a supportive place to grow and learn, especially early in your career. The people are welcoming, the culture encourages development, and I’ve had real opportunities to build my skills and confidence. The company invests in apprentices, offers great training, and gives you the chance to work on meaningful projects that make a difference. Overall, it’s a genuinely positive environment where you feel valued and motivated.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Balfour Beatty?
If I were giving tips to someone applying, I’d say to just be yourself and show that you’re willing to learn. You don’t need loads of experience — enthusiasm and a good attitude go a long way. Make sure you research the company and have a couple of questions ready, because it shows you’re genuinely interested. Most importantly, don’t overthink it; they’re looking for potential, not perfection.
