Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
As an apprentice quantity surveyor I am responsible for making sure our labour and plant is paid. My daily tasks include completing payments, communicating with our subcontractors, managing subcontractor packages and taking site visits to track the progress of the project.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I have really enjoyed my programme so far. Balfour Beatty carries out an Early Career programme during your first two years as an apprentice or graduate. This provides an opportunity to network and meet others in the company who are in the same position as you, as well as learning about your strengths and weaknesses in a team and how to better yourself in a working environment. This programme involves a one week residential in the Lake District where you get to do team building activities and meet early careers from across the country.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I have learnt many skills during this role. Some of them include technology skills as I have learnt to use different types of new software. Along with this, I have developed my understanding of the construction industry and projects in the UK. I have also improved my communication skills which has helped me work in a team and learn more from others.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
I started my apprenticeship and was introduced to my team and early careers cohort. In the first few months I was enrolled onto my college course which takes place once a week. I was also provided with necessary training.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I received support from our early careers supporter who made sure that I was happy with my role and team. I also received support from my line manager as well as other colleagues who started as apprentices.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
Quarterly review meetings which my manager partook in. I was always able to reach out to my training provider when it came to asking for extra help or advise on a unit.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
My qualification has helped to understand certain concepts of my role. However, I believe working alongside learning is what has helped me fully grow in my role as I am able to apply what I have learnt.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
Yes, there are a few networking opportunities which are provided from my employer as an early career. In addition, we also have social events in our teams.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Balfour Beatty to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I have really enjoyed my time on this course and also enjoy working in the construction sector. My employer provides a lot of support and has a great early career programme. I have seen my confidence majorly grow within these two years.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Balfour Beatty?
Before applying to Balfour Beatty, it's really beneficial to gain some work experience. Coming straight from secondary school to work can be a massive change and getting this work experience can let you know what you are getting into and help you understand a working environment. You can also learn if the role genuinely suits your skills and interests.
