Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

Day-to-day I complete business administration tasks such as inputting and entering data and overall dealing with vehicle offences across the West Midlands region. I have 6 hours of study a week to complete my assignments for my apprenticeship as well as monthly meetings with my apprenticeship officer.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I enjoy the responsibility and independence I gain in the role, implementing my job and tasks in my apprenticeship programme. Every assignment is different and helps me to become better in my role.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I have further developed my communicating skills in this role by speaking to the public and other stakeholders over email and the phone.
I have also learned a lot of administrative skills and computing skills.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

We have monthly apprenticeship meetings that go into detail about new assignments and have our previous assignments marked monthly.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

I get support towards my apprenticeship by having 6 hours of dedicated study time a week undisturbed. I can ask colleagues/supervisors for support with my assignments and with any questions regarding the role.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

I get 1-to-1s with my apprenticeship officer where I can ask any questions and be given feedback regarding my progress along the course. I can always reach out to her with any questions and receive feedback on every assignment I do.

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

I feel like the apprenticeship really helps me in my role as Business Support Assistant as I get to learn about the organisation and how to develop my skills.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

There are many free activities to get involved with and there is something for everyone. For example, walking club, fishing clubs, football, basketball, rugby.

Why?

Because of the support I receive in my role, such as regular 1-to-1 meetings with my line manager and guidance from all colleagues to help excel in my role.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to West Midlands Police?

Don't be overwhelmed by job role descriptions for WMP and do not limit yourself. There is a massive amount of support in the organisation to help you achieve skills and become strong in your job.
