Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
On a daily basis, I was involved in agile practices such as team stand up, and completing stories on the sprint. I worked with another intern to complete a software development project related to the work of our team over the 9 week internship. I worked with both junior and experienced developers within my team, and was responsible for documenting and presenting knowledge shares on the work I completed.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
I was able to work on a modernization project that was relevant to my team's current work, and will be useful to them in future. The other intern on my team and I worked on this project independently, although we could ask for help when required. I did not work on any production code or directly with clients, which was ideal for me.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
I have improved my skills in java programming, Kubernetes deployment, and application monitoring using Splunk. I learned new skills around mocking tests using Mockito, and did a range of courses covering cloud technologies and Kafka. I also improved my confidence when presenting, and my peer-programming skills. I have learned how to valuably utilize the skills and experiences of those around you.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
My line manager and wider team were incredibly friendly and supportive throughout my internship experience, and were always available when I needed help. They showed me how to do things rather than just doing them on my behalf. Additionally, I was assigned a mentor who was also very friendly and approachable, and answered any questions I had about my role and the company in general.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The atmosphere in the office is relaxed, welcoming, and fun! I was able to be involved in many events, activities, and volunteering opportunities - and there were so many more I could have joined. Lots of free food and swag too! I particularly enjoyed a PRIDE networking lunch event for LGBT employees and allies. My team went out for lunch and coffees often too.

I loved spending my summer with JP Morgan. The work was challenging and rewarding, and I learned a lot from my team. Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend J.P. Morgan to a friend?
Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to J.P. Morgan
Start the process early and keep on top of it - there's a lot to do! The assessment centre was my route in, but it's not the only one - keep an eye out for the hackathon events if a practical experience is better for you. Read up about the firm, but don't stress if you don't have a financial background, as you learn a lot by doing.
