Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
As an apprentice civil engineer, I learn how projects are planned, designed and built whilst working alongside experinced engineers. I am mainly based on site, but do office work (quality) which helps enhance my knowledge as an engineer. I assist with setting out works, marking up as-builts, ensuring health and safety and communicating with others on a daily basis.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I thoroughly enjoy my programme and feel I have been able to progress massively since starting my role in 2024. I enjoy being independent and working with others to manage and overcome tasks and problems. I like being able to communicate with a lot of people on a daily and networking with people who have lots of knowledge in the construction industry.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I have learnt a lot of skills since becoming an apprentice engineer, not just physical skills but mental skills, like increased confidence. From never knowing anything about construction, I now independently set out and provide information to help sub-contractors. I also try and help solve problems with the skills I have developed to help my team overcome any issues.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
My programme is well structured. I attend college once a week and I am on site every other day. From this, I gain on-site experience whilst being taught the theory side of construction which has greatly widened my knowledge as an engineer.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I receive great support from my employer and everyone in my team. They are all willing to help, support and push me to be the best I can be. If i ever have any problems or need support in any of my work (including college) they are there for me and assist me in the best way that they can.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
I feel I receive support from my training provider (LCB), but it could be improved. There has been a lot of times they haven't had the staff in to teach us and the class has fallen behind on work. As we only go in to college once a week, consistency is important and I feel my training provide may lack in that sector. However, I am doing well with my college and ahead with my work. Currently going through the process of completing my EPA.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
My training provider does help me to perform better in my role by teaching me the theory side of being an engineer and not just the physical side. I feel I have gained lots of good, valuable knowledge I am able to put towards my on-site work.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
I have attended multiple of networking events, women in construction events and even taken part in multiple podcasts to show people what life is like as an apprentice. Balfour Beatty are extremely good with ensuring I receive the best oppurtunities to help me progress through my role as an engineer.
