Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
Day to day I assist in subcontract management - getting them into contract, dealing with communications, applications for payment, forecasts and variations. I also manage the cost report element of the CVR and draft and communicate formal communications to the client on a online platform in regards to change events. I also join various commercial meetings - both internal and external and lead meetings with the engineers to review subcontract applications and keep updated on the works being completed.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I have learnt and developed many new skills. I came into the role having minimal understanding of the Power T&D sector or much commercial understanding. I now have been promoted to assistant QS, which I feel shows the development, in both knowledge and skills, I have made since beginning my journey at Balfour Beatty just two years prior. My confidence as well as teamwork and communication skills continue to grow on a daily basis.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
I have one day a week allocated to study and 3 days every semester where we attend the university in person.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
The office has a community which organises events such as food vans, meals, football, padel, volunteering, etc. for lunch times and evenings. There are also social events organised across my projects.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Balfour Beatty to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Beginning my role here as a QS has really developed me as a person. I am given responsibilities and constantly motivated, by myself and others, to progress within my career and there is so much room for growth. The people are great and there is never such thing as a silly question and everyone is always willing to help and support, which makes the workplace a really comfortable and welcoming place to be.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Balfour Beatty?
Be prepared, have an understanding of the job and always be willing to learn and develop. Snatch up every opportunity that comes your way even if it may be outside of your comfort zone.
