Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
At the start of my shift, I take a handover from the previous manager. I check key information like sales, staffing levels, any ongoing issues, and whether targets such as service times and food safety checks are being met. From there, I plan the shift by positioning the team where they’re needed most, making sure we’re set up for both quiet and busy periods. Throughout the shift, I lead and support the team. I supervise crew members and crew trainers, making sure everyone knows their role and is working effectively. I stay visible on the floor, stepping in to help during busy times, coaching team members when needed, and keeping morale high. I’m also responsible for delivering a great customer experience. If any issues or complaints arise, I handle them professionally and quickly. I make sure service is fast, friendly, and accurate, especially during peak times when pressure is highest. Food safety and compliance are a big part of my role. I ensure all procedures are followed correctly, including temperature checks, hygiene standards, and cleanliness. I’m accountable for maintaining McDonald’s standards at all times. I also monitor performance throughout my shift. This includes keeping an eye on sales, labour, waste, and service times. If needed, I make adjustments—such as moving staff or managing labour—to help the restaurant meet its targets. Alongside shift management, I may also be involved in training and developing team members, helping them improve their skills and progress within the business. Overall, my role is to lead the team, manage operations, maintain high standards, and ensure the restaurant performs well while delivering a positive experience for both customers and employees.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I enjoy my degree apprenticeship in Business Management with McDonald’s to a large extent, as it allows me to develop both academically and professionally at the same time. One of the main things I value is the opportunity to apply what I learn directly into my role in the restaurant. This makes the learning feel relevant and practical, rather than purely theoretical. I particularly enjoy gaining a deeper understanding of how the business operates beyond day-to-day shift management. Topics such as leadership, operations, and people management help me reflect on my own performance and improve how I lead my team. It has made me more confident in decision-making and more aware of how my actions impact both staff and customer experience. Another aspect I enjoy is the chance to develop my long-term career. The apprenticeship is helping me build skills that will support progression within McDonald’s or in other management roles in the future. Earning a qualification while working is also a big advantage, as I’m gaining experience and education at the same time. That said, balancing full-time work with studying can sometimes be challenging, especially during busy periods in the restaurant. It requires good time management and self-discipline to keep up with coursework alongside my responsibilities as a manager. Overall, I enjoy the programme because it is helping me grow, build confidence, and develop valuable skills, even though it can be demanding at times.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
Yes, through my degree apprenticeship I have both learnt new skills and developed existing ones. I’ve developed my leadership skills significantly. While I was already leading shifts, the programme has helped me understand different leadership styles and when to apply them. I now feel more confident adapting my approach depending on the situation and the individuals I’m working with. My communication skills have also improved. I’ve become better at giving clear instructions, providing constructive feedback, and handling more challenging conversations with team members in a professional way. In terms of new skills, I’ve gained a better understanding of business concepts such as performance analysis, time management, and planning. I’m more aware of how to look at data like sales, labour, and productivity, and use that information to make decisions on shift. I’ve also improved my organisational and time management skills, especially when balancing work with studying. Managing deadlines alongside a full-time role has helped me become more structured and disciplined. Overall, the apprenticeship has helped me grow both as a manager and as an individual, by strengthening the skills I already had and introducing new ones that support my development.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
I feel that my degree apprenticeship programme is generally well organised and structured. The course is set out in a clear way, with modules that build on each other and link closely to my role as a manager. This makes it easier to understand how the academic side connects to what I do day to day in the restaurant. The programme provides clear deadlines and expectations for assignments, which helps me plan my time alongside my work schedule. The support from tutors and coaches is also structured, with regular check-ins and guidance to keep me on track and help me progress. I also find that the mix of learning methods—such as online sessions, independent study, and practical application in the workplace—adds to the structure of the programme and keeps it engaging. However, there are times when balancing work and study can make it feel slightly less manageable, particularly during busy periods at work. Occasionally, deadlines can feel close together, which requires good time management to stay on top of everything. Overall, the programme is well structured and provides a clear framework for learning and development, as long as I stay organised and manage my time effectively.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
3/5
Overall, I receive good support from my employer throughout my degree apprenticeship. My managers are generally understanding and supportive of my development, and they recognise the value of the programme. I’m given opportunities to apply what I learn in the workplace, and I feel encouraged to grow and progress. However, there are times when I don’t always receive the full amount of off-the-job training time that is required. Due to the demands of the business and how busy the restaurant can be, it can sometimes be difficult to step away from my role to focus on coursework or learning activities. Despite this, I do still feel supported in terms of guidance and encouragement, but having more consistent protected time for study would improve the overall experience and help me get the most out of the programme. Overall, the support is positive, but there is room for improvement in ensuring dedicated learning time is consistently provided.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
I receive excellent support from my training provider while working towards my qualification. They provide clear guidance on assignments, expectations, and deadlines, which helps me stay organised and focused. My tutor/coach is very supportive and approachable, offering regular check-ins to review my progress and provide constructive feedback. This has been really helpful in identifying areas for improvement and building my confidence in my work. They also ensure that support is available whenever I need it, whether that’s through scheduled sessions or additional help if I’m struggling with a particular topic. The learning resources provided are clear and relevant, making it easier to understand and apply concepts. Overall, the level of support I receive from my training provider is excellent and plays a key role in helping me successfully progress through my apprenticeship.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
I feel that my qualification through my training provider helps me perform better in my role to a great extent. The knowledge and skills I’ve gained are directly relevant to my day-to-day responsibilities as a manager, which makes the learning practical and easy to apply. The programme has improved my understanding of leadership and people management, allowing me to support my team more effectively, adapt my approach when needed, and handle situations with more confidence. I’m also better at communicating expectations, giving feedback, and managing performance. It has also strengthened my ability to analyse business performance. I now have a better understanding of areas such as sales, labour, and productivity, and I can use this information to make more informed decisions during my shifts. In addition, the qualification has helped me become more organised and reflective. I’m more aware of my own strengths and areas for development, and I actively look for ways to improve how I manage and lead. Overall, the qualification has had a positive impact on my performance, helping me become a more confident, knowledgeable, and effective manager.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
3/5
There are limited extra-curricular activities available through my workplace. The main opportunities to get involved tend to be seasonal events, such as a summer and winter one-day event. These are usually organised as social gatherings for staff, giving everyone a chance to relax, celebrate, and build relationships outside of the usual work environment. While these events are enjoyable and help with team bonding, there aren’t many ongoing activities such as sports teams or regular networking events. Overall, the extra-curricular opportunities are quite limited, but the seasonal events do provide a positive social aspect to the workplace.

Yes
Why?

For example, there are apprenticeships and even degree programmes, which allow you to gain qualifications while working and building experience at the same time. The company also offers a range of employee benefits that support both wellbeing and work-life balance. This includes access to an Employee Assistance Programme, counsellors, private healthcare, and life insurance, which can be really valuable for support outside of work. In addition, there are employee discounts on food and with other suppliers, which is a nice added benefit. Overall, I would recommend McDonald’s because it provides strong development opportunities, good support systems, and a range of benefits for employees.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to McDonald's?
I would advise anyone applying to McDonald’s to be positive, reliable, and willing to learn. Attitude is one of the most important things—having a strong work ethic and being open to feedback will help you settle in quickly and progress. It’s also important to be prepared to work in a fast-paced environment. Shifts can be busy and demanding, so being able to stay calm under pressure and work well as part of a team is key. I would recommend taking every opportunity that’s offered to you. Whether it’s training, extra responsibilities, or development programmes like apprenticeships, these can really help you build skills and progress within the company. Good communication is also essential. Being able to work well with others, listen, and support your team will make a big difference in how successful you are in the role.
