Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
As a level 3 Building Services Engineering Apprentice, my role consists of assisting with the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical and mechanical systems in facilities such as hospitals. On a day-to-day basis, I work with qualified engineers to install equipment such as lighting, power supplies, and emergency systems, while learning how to follow each building's safety regulations, as well as gaining a greater understanding of technical drawings and industry standards. The role includes developing practical skills on-site, completing coursework and training, and gaining professional experience.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I enjoy my apprenticeship because it allows me to gain hands-on experience while developing my technical knowledge. I enjoy working on-site with experienced engineers because I can ask questions, and they're always happy to help me expand my skill set. The programme is rewarding as it helps me build skills for my future career.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
During my apprenticeship, I have developed a range of practical and technical skills. I have improved my ability to install and maintain electrical systems, including lighting and emergency lighting, and have learned the installation processes for air conditioning units and how plant rooms should be maintained. I've also learnt the importance of being compliant and how to properly follow regulations safely. I have also developed key life skills such as problem-solving, teamwork, and confidence when working on site with experienced engineers.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
My programme is well organised, as my training is very easy to access, and there is always someone willing to give me support if I need it. My college work is laid out well, and my tutors provide in-depth advice for how I can develop both my practical skills and online class work. The structure is great as I receive a year plan of when my calls with my tutor are, and my visits to do block release take place, along with a multitude of lessons to hone my skills in.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I receive ample support from everyone in my team and my college tutor, as they're always readily available, whether that is in person or by a phone call, and I'm always encouraged to ask questions about topics I'm not fully confident in to get me to that next level.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
I receive lots of support from my training provider, whether that be one-to-one teams calls, phone calls, or online classes with my group. They also give extremley in depth feedback on my work, which allows me to boost my learning to the next level.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
My qualification helps me perform better, as I have learnt completely new skills that relate to my job role, which boosts my confidence both online and in classes and on-site. My qualification also develops previous skills and knowledge I have, whether that be working on electrical equations or working out the flow of water in certain systems we have in our facilities.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
In Mitie, as an apprentice, I got to visit the headquarters, which is located in the Shard in London, which was a great experience as I got to communicate with both the CEO of the company and fellow apprentices and more experienced engineers, who were great for picking up little bits of advice from.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Mitie to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I would recommend Mitie to a friend as it provides strong training and support for apprentices, helping them develop their practical skills and industry knowledge. The company offers opportunities to work on real projects and learn from experienced engineers. I believe it is also a great place to build a long-lasting career in building services. They are also in the top 20 for the Top 100 Apprenticeship Employers.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Mitie?
My advice to others applying would be to show a strong willingness to learn and a good attitude towards teamwork and safety. You must be confident, ask questions as often as you can to gain that extra bit of knowledge, and embrace the workplace environment as your own by building relationships with both colleagues and staff members in your facilities. Because if you step your foot in the door as an approachable, willing engineer, you'll create a good image of both yourself, which opens doors for you as well as creating a good image for Mitie.
