Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
My role varies on a daily basis. Repeated tasks include first drafts of documents, incorporating comments and emailing clients and external parties to progress the transaction.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
3/5
The work and study aspect of the programme is enjoyable however I personally struggle with the prospect of moving and also the continued requirement to commute for as long as I do.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
My communication and legal knowledge skills have definitely advanced. Over the course of the past three and a half/four years I have nurtured a wide variety of skills that has made a significant impact on my ability to get involved with the work that comes in and contribute to the wider team.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
The programme is well structured and organised. My one criticism would be that of the university in that they often require multiple submissions of submitted tasks and mock exams in one week periods and then nothing for a few weeks. To ensure we are able to submit as many of these as possible, it would be useful to have the tasks more evenly spread out.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
3/5
Ashurst is okay with support however from a pastoral perspective it could be improved. Whilst they are great employers, their duty of care to apprentices sits at a higher standard and I feel as though this is something that they frequently miss the mark on.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
University of Law is very good at providing lectures, tasks and reading that all contributes to a positive outcome in my grades.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
The particular area of law that I work under is very niche and so the actual qualification is not directly relevant to the work I do. However, the qualification is essential to progress through the programme and it is extremely beneficial to remain in education whilst gaining experience in the legal sector.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
3/5
The team frequently puts on social events but this revolves more around drinking and less around professional networking/sports based events. That being said, the firm is very proactive when it comes to listening to feedback and it falls on individual teams to coordinate team socials and arrange extra-curricular activities where necessary.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Ashurst to a friend?
Yes
Why?
As an employer, the firm is very professional and easy to navigate. The social benefits of the role, ie. private medical cover, team socials and the pay are very respectable.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Ashurst?
To consider how transferable skills will support you in this role and at this firm.
