Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
I’m the Communications and Digital Content Officer at the University of Oxford’s Department of Engineering Science. My role brings together strategy and creativity across digital platforms, where I assist with the department’s social media presence, content creation, analytics and reporting, digital branding, and web publishing. My responsibilities include managing and producing digital assets such as event photography and videography, overseeing graphic and logo design, assist maintaining and updating our website, purchasing branded materials, and assisting with departmental events. I take pride in ensuring our content is accessible, consistent with the University’s brand, and tailored to reflect the work and impact of engineering research at Oxford.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I love the degree apprenticeship programme with Middlesex University as it challenges you to make design considerations on a deeper level and teaches you the fundamentals to be the best you can be in your role. Whilst it hasn't been long, I am sure that this qualification combined with my role will open doors and opportunities I wouldn't have had otherwise.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
Through my apprenticeship, I’ve both developed existing skills and gained new ones. I’ve strengthened my understanding of design theory and creative processes, learning how to apply academic frameworks to justify and refine my practical work. This has improved my confidence in articulating design decisions and reflecting critically on projects.
I’ve also developed stronger research and analytical skills, particularly in linking industry practice to the wider creative economy, sustainability, and inclusive design principles. In addition, I’ve improved my project planning and structured workflow approach, moving from intuitive design decisions to more consciously informed and theory-led processes

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
The programme is well structured, with clear modules that build progressively on both theoretical knowledge and practical application. The integration of academic learning with workplace projects helps reinforce understanding. At times, balancing deadlines alongside full-time work can be challenging, but overall the structure supports steady development and reflection.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I receive strong support from my employer. I am allocated six hours per week for off-the-job learning, which helps me stay on track with my academic work alongside my role. My manager is very supportive and responsive, regularly checking in on my progress and making accommodations where needed to help balance workload and deadlines.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
I receive a good level of support from my training provider. We have regular check-ins to review progress and discuss any questions or challenges, which helps me stay on track. There are also multiple points of contact available, including tutors and wider support teams across the university, who are approachable and responsive whenever additional guidance is needed.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
My qualification has helped me perform more effectively in my role by strengthening the theoretical foundation behind my practical work. It has improved my ability to justify creative decisions, apply design frameworks more consciously, and reflect critically on projects. This has increased my confidence when leading branding and digital content work, as I can now articulate not just what works, but why it works.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
Yes, there are a range of extra-curricular opportunities available. We have staff social events throughout the year and dedicated time out as a team, which helps strengthen collaboration and morale. There are also professional networking opportunities through University-wide Communities of Practice. For example, I lead the Social Media Community of Practice, which connects colleagues across departments to share knowledge and best practice. These opportunities support both social connection and professional development.
