Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

5/5
In my role as an Apprentice Course Administrator within the Department of Politics and International Relations (DPIR), I provide administrative support to ensure the smooth delivery of academic programmes. My role involves coordinating a range of tasks that support both students and academic staff, contributing to the overall efficiency of the department.
On a day-to-day basis, my responsibilities include managing student queries, supporting the organisation of teaching activities, and maintaining accurate records. I assist with processes such as room bookings, timetable coordination, and the preparation and distribution of assessment materials and marks. I also use systems such as Excel and Canvas to manage data, upload course information, and ensure students have access to accurate and up-to-date resources.
In addition, I regularly communicate with internal and external stakeholders, including academic staff, students, and other administrative teams, to ensure tasks are completed on time and in line with university policies. My role requires strong organisational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple priorities, particularly during busy term times.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

5/5
Overall, I enjoy the course and find it valuable in developing my skills and understanding of business administration. It helps me apply theoretical knowledge to my role, particularly in areas such as organisation, communication, and project management.
I also appreciate the opportunity to reflect on my work and identify areas for improvement, which supports my professional development. While there are some challenges, such as balancing coursework with day-to-day responsibilities, the programme is a positive and worthwhile experience.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

5/5
I have both learnt new skills and developed existing ones throughout the programme. I have strengthened my organisational and time management skills, particularly in balancing my workload between day-to-day responsibilities and coursework.
I have also developed my communication skills by working with a range of stakeholders, both internal and external, and ensuring information is clear and professional. In addition, I have improved my digital skills, especially in using tools such as Excel, Microsoft Forms, and Canvas to manage data and support administrative processes.
The programme has also helped me build confidence in problem-solving and taking a more structured approach to tasks, which has had a positive impact on my performance in my role.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

5/5
The programme is generally well organised and structured. It follows a clear apprenticeship model that combines work-based learning with scheduled training, including college attendance and regular assessment visits. This provides a consistent framework, with off-the-job training and support built into the programme, helping to ensure steady progress throughout the course.
The structure also includes a defined timeline, with a practical training period followed by an end-point assessment consisting of a knowledge test, portfolio interview, and project presentation. This gives a clear pathway from learning to assessment. Overall, the programme is well structured, although balancing the different elements alongside day-to-day work can sometimes be challenging.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

5/5
I receive a good level of support from my employer throughout the programme. I am given time to complete my coursework and off-the-job training, and my manager is supportive in allowing me to balance my apprenticeship with my day-to-day responsibilities. I also receive guidance and feedback when needed, particularly when working on projects or developing new skills. Overall, the support provided helps me stay on track and make steady progress in both my role and the programme.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

5/5
I receive a good level of support from my training provider while working towards my qualification. Regular meetings and reviews help me stay on track, and I am given clear guidance on assignments and expectations. Support is available when needed, whether that is through feedback on my work or answering any questions I have. This ongoing support helps me understand the requirements of the programme and progress confidently towards completion.

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

5/5
I feel that my qualification supports my performance in my role to a good extent. It helps me develop key skills such as organisation, communication, and problem-solving, which I apply directly in my day-to-day work. The programme also encourages me to take a more structured and reflective approach to tasks, improving my efficiency and attention to detail. While much of my learning also comes from on-the-job experience, the qualification provides a useful framework that strengthens my overall performance.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

5/5
Yes, there are a range of extra-curricular activities available within the workplace. These include social events and opportunities to connect with colleagues across different teams, as well as professional events such as talks, workshops, and networking sessions. There are also wider University opportunities, including societies, wellbeing activities, and events that staff can get involved in.

I’d keep expectations realistic, Oxford isn’t just about prestige; it’s a large, complex organisation with structured processes and high standards.
