Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
I work as a Commercial Management Apprentice supporting cost and contract management across a project. My day‑to‑day role involves reviewing change requests, updating trackers, preparing meeting minutes, coordinating with consultants and subcontractors, and ensuring commercial information is accurate and clearly documented. I have been developing my understanding of commercial processes through hands‑on project involvement and structured learning.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I enjoy the programme overall and feel like I’m gaining valuable experience, especially through real project responsibilities and exposure to commercial processes. At times the work and work language can take time to adjust to but it has helped me develop professionally and build confidence in my role. I’m looking forward to continuing to grow as I progress through the apprenticeship.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
I’ve developed a wide range of new skills through my apprenticeship, particularly in commercial administration, documentation, and communication. I’ve strengthened my ability to analyse changes prepare accurate meeting minutes, manage trackers, and interpret technical information from consultants. I’ve also improved my confidence in coordinating with different stakeholders, despite being at such an early stage in my career.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
The programme is generally well structured, with clear expectations and a good balance between on‑the‑job learning and academic requirements. The overall the structure supports my development and gives me the opportunities I need to progress. However, the organisation could be more consistent around how new starters are supported. For example, line managers would benefit from clearer guidance on how to help/support their apprentices and new team members settle in. This would help us to understand our role/responsibilities more.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
I receive a good level of support from my employer, particularly through day‑to‑day guidance and regular check‑ins. Overall, I feel supported and able to progress, with access to people who are willing to help when needed.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
I receive a good level of support from my training provider, particularly through structured learning materials, scheduled check‑ins, and clear guidance on what is required for each module. There are times when communication could be more consistent, but overall the support helps me stay on track with my qualifications and understand what I need to progress.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
The qualification supports my role by giving me the theoretical understanding behind the commercial processes I use day‑to‑day. Topics such as cost planning, contract management, sustainability and project communication directly reinforce the work I do on the project, helping me understand not just what I’m doing but why it matters. Some modules feel more relevant than others, but overall the qualification helps me perform more confidently and make better sense of the commercial responsibilities I’m developing.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
2/5
There are very few extra‑curricular activities available at work. Aside from the occasional social events, there are no regular team‑building activities, networking opportunities, or professional development groups to get involved in. More structured or frequent activities would help apprentices and new starters feel more connected to their wider team at work or on different projects, rather than just the immediate apprentice/emerging talent cohort.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Mace Construct to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I would recommend Mace Construct to a friend, mainly because the projects offer strong learning opportunities and real responsibility early on. The experience can vary depending on the team which offers a range of different opportunities and chances to develop as a professional.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Mace Construct?
People applying to Mace Construct should be prepared to take initiative and learn quickly, as you’re given real responsibilities early on. It helps to be organised, ask questions, and make the most of the support available. I’d also recommend being proactive in seeking guidance not just from your line manager but other members of the team, as the level of structure can vary depending on who you work with. If you’re motivated and willing to get involved, the experience can be very rewarding.
