Overview of the Role

Overall, how would you describe your experience at Unilever?
Perfect for my career development. Extremely supportive and provided the foundation I needed to set up my career for life.
What are the main responsibilities of the role and which elements of the role do you enjoy the most?
Data analytics, data engineering, data science, supply chain management, project management and business strategy. Overall the perfect range to set up a leader in the field of data.
To what extent does your role give you the opportunity to contribute meaningfully and feel valued by your team?
5/5
I have felt valued by every team I've worked in, and I categorically know I have left a positive impact on the business.
How does your compensation package - including perks & benefits - fairly remunerate you for the work you do?
4/5
Very good total benefits package but the starting base salary could be higher. Note that there are pay rises each year based on performance.
The total benefits package includes: Annual bonus, company shares, pension matching, health insurance and more.
How well do you feel the role is preparing you for your future career?
5/5
I can confidently say I have received the exact experience I was looking for across my rotations.
How would you rate the extent to which you were developing new or existing skills through formal training and your day-to-day role?
5/5
Each of my roles gave me the opportunity to learn on the job with formal training and/or certifications where appropriate.

Experience & Company Culture

How is the support you receive?
4/5
Most of my line managers were excellent and all of them supported my development in their own ways. We also get a career sponsor who sticks with us through all of our rotations, who acts like a coach. There is a very supportive culture at Unilever which extends through leadership, so there are lots of opportunities for getting mentors. Their main improvement area is HR support, as they seem understaffed vs how many employees they need to support. HR support is slow, but it's there.
How is your work-life balance?
4/5
There is a performance culture at Unilever which, in my case, encouraged me to work later on some nights. That being said, Wellbeing is a big agenda pushed by Unilever and they provide resources for supporting this. Also in context of other sectors like banking, work-life balance at Unilever is very good.
What is the organisational culture, values and general atmosphere like?
5/5
Excellent, to the point where I think it would take a lot to make me want to leave. Especially for an org of this size, Unilever has a very positive, friendly and supportive culture. I absolutely do not feel like "a cog in the machine". I feel valued as a person.
Regarding hybrid working: Unilever's company-wide policy is 2 days in the office, 3 work from home every week. You can go in more often than that if you wish.
How would you rate Unilever initiatives when it comes to equality, diversity, inclusion and accessibility?
5/5
There are company communities dedicated to supporting and spreading awareness of these topics, and there are early career programmes designed to encouraging diversity by partnering with certain charities.
How would you rate Unilever CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) initiatives?
4/5
I joined when Unilever had an extremely heavy focus on sustainability and social initiatives. Following CEO changes, policies like these are still in place but I feel they have taken a step back in how ambitious they are. One could argue they are more realistic now, but I preferred the original ambition.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Unilever to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Perfect for career development. You get to choose from a broad range of experiences to move into your dream career, and your colleagues will support you all the way.
How well did the role match your expectations based on the recruitment process?
5/5
Exceeded expectations. I went in expecting the scheme to be rigid and defined for me in terms of roles. In reality I was able to tailor my experience. I was able to get the exact roles I needed to gain the ideal experience and skills for my personal career goals. This includes technical skills as well as leadership/management skills.
When considering the recruitment & onboarding process, have you any specific tips or advice you would give to others applying to Unilever?
Be passionate and purposeful. Bear in mind the company culture I have detailed elsewhere as you will only be hired if your mindset fits that culture. Also, apply early - there are not many spaces on the UFLP.
