Overview of the Role

Overall, how would you describe your experience at Balfour Beatty?
It has been a very positive experience. The company is obviously very big, however I have been given the connections necessary for my development, through my line manager, mentor and buddy. All of these individuals have completed or is currently completing the finance graduate scheme therefore having the understanding of what is required to gain the qualification. The finance graduate scheme takes you through either CIMA or ACCA level 7 apprenticeship with Kaplan Finances, meaning there is a lot of work on top of my daily tasks.
What are the main responsibilities of the role and which elements of the role do you enjoy the most?
I do general project accounting tasks such as reconciling numbers for month ends, and keeping track of spending compared to budgets and forecasts. There is a lot of data developing as well, such as power query and power BI.
To what extent does your role give you the opportunity to contribute meaningfully and feel valued by your team?
3/5
I do feel as though I give value to my team as I can help them with smaller tasks which helps with the workload. But there is a lot of emphasis on my own personal development.
How does your compensation package - including perks & benefits - fairly remunerate you for the work you do?
3/5
You get some expenses for any relocation, and travel expenses gets covered when you are not in your normal office.
How well do you feel the role is preparing you for your future career?
5/5
There is a lot of development opportunities, such as external training to become chartered, but also a lot of soft skills development opportunities. Everyone is also very accommodating with their time to communicate with you about what you want out of the company.
How would you rate the extent to which you were developing new or existing skills through formal training and your day-to-day role?
5/5
The level 7 apprenticeship side of the finance graduate scheme really emphasises the importance of on-the-job training. I can complete formal online courses during my working hours, either through the Balfour Beatty academy, the internal system, or through Kaplan, who is the external training provider.

Experience & Company Culture

How is the support you receive?
4/5
My Line manager has completed the graduate scheme, my mentor completed the graduate scheme but works in a different department, and my buddy who is a few years my senior, is currently on the graduate scheme. This greatly helps as the support I receive is very good, and my support system is very tailored to me.
How is your work-life balance?
4/5
They promote work life balances, you can work from home 2 days a week. If something ever comes up, they're very accommodating.
What is the organisational culture, values and general atmosphere like?
3/5
There is a male / female imbalance. However, there are schemes to promote the inclusion of women into the industry, my manging director is a woman.
How would you rate Balfour Beatty initiatives when it comes to equality, diversity, inclusion and accessibility?
4/5
they have lots of specific group support meetings such as carers etc.
How would you rate Balfour Beatty CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) initiatives?
4/5
There's lots of volunteering opportunities, I haven't been involved in them but I know they are there.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Balfour Beatty to a friend?
Yes
Why?
The culture is great, as it's such a big company there's a lot of career opportunities. I have not experienced any micro managing.
The professional qualification side of it also makes it a great company.
How well did the role match your expectations based on the recruitment process?
4/5
I did a internship with them before applying so I knew what I was getting myself in for
When considering the recruitment & onboarding process, have you any specific tips or advice you would give to others applying to Balfour Beatty?
Know some of the contracts and the nature of them. How they work, who the client is ect. makes it easier to be conversational.
