Overview of the Role

Overall, how would you describe your experience at Unilever?
It has been excellent so far, there is a strong support network and the structure of the graduate scheme is very good.
What are the main responsibilities of the role and which elements of the role do you enjoy the most?
Role 1 - Response Planner
Lead the forecasting and supply of several innovations. Maintain good service and forecast bias on an ongoing basis, i.e., action against biggest drivers. Most enjoy sharing positive news with the customer teams.
Role 2 - Customer Operations Leadership Team
Ran series of ongoing monthly meetings, allowing for better communication and collaboration between all the individual teams that make up customer operations. Also worked on Logistics Cost per Ton and helped to understand drivers of big cost increases. Most enjoyed attending a well put together meeting and getting clear discussion out of it.
To what extent does your role give you the opportunity to contribute meaningfully and feel valued by your team?
5/5
My line managers have been very good at treating me as someone in a leadership position, and allowing me to lead discussions and team activities.
How does your compensation package - including perks & benefits - fairly remunerate you for the work you do?
4/5
Salary is fine, but the company makes it tough regarding bonuses and pay rises. Sometimes can become a bit demoralising when you feel your peers have received some sort of increase, while you haven't, and the company isn't able to fairly describe why.
How well do you feel the role is preparing you for your future career?
5/5
Very well, by putting me in leadership positions I am learning what it is like to be a manager, and what challenges they face. I feel by the end of the scheme I will be in a good position to start working as a junior manager.
How would you rate the extent to which you were developing new or existing skills through formal training and your day-to-day role?
5/5
Very well. Mostly people skills and how to manage many different colleagues and stakeholders. Also some digital skills.

Experience & Company Culture

How is the support you receive?
5/5
My career sponsor is absolutely excellent. He cares very deeply and makes it his mission to help me succeed on the scheme. I've had very good line managers who give me good advice and feedback.
How is your work-life balance?
4/5
Roles 1 and 2 were all good. Role 3 is becoming harder. I need to work quite a lot of hours per week outside of my contracted, takes away my energy to then do other things.
What is the organisational culture, values and general atmosphere like?
5/5
Lovely and diverse.
How would you rate Unilever initiatives when it comes to equality, diversity, inclusion and accessibility?
5/5
I do like that the London office is very good in terms of ethnicities of people and making it a diverse place. Hard to say in terms of accessibility, I don't know anyone with any special needs at work.
How would you rate Unilever CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) initiatives?
4/5
Good, but needs improvement. Their goals of reducing waste seem more cost driven rather than sustainability driven. I.e., if it is cheaper to throw waste away rather than rework it, they still do.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Unilever to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Lovely culture of people, everyone is friendly and they make you feel valued. Graduate scheme gives good opportunities to develop a network and explore many different roles within the business, to really grow your career.
How well did the role match your expectations based on the recruitment process?
5/5
Recruitment process was fine, it did mimic what working life really is like, especially at the assessment centre.
When considering the recruitment & onboarding process, have you any specific tips or advice you would give to others applying to Unilever?
Do as much research as you can on how to succeed in assessment centres. There are some adverts which specifically explain how to succeed in Unilever applications; read them.
