Overview of the Role

Overall, how would you describe your experience at Balfour Beatty?
Overall my experience at Balfour Beatty has been great. I've felt genuinely involved in the work happening on my project and have been given meaningful opportunities to take ownership of tasks. It was also very easy to fit in with the team, and I quickly became acquainted with my colleagues at Balfour Beatty.
What are the main responsibilities of the role and which elements of the role do you enjoy the most?
My main responsibility is managing my own package. It comes with a wide range of tasks, but it’s also highly rewarding. I’m involved in almost every aspect - RAMS, programme, hiring kit, and making key decisions. There’s something enjoyable about being in charge of a section of the project, especially with the support of my team. It’s also extremely satisfying to see the works start on site after all the planning and preparation is complete.
To what extent does your role give you the opportunity to contribute meaningfully and feel valued by your team?
5/5
My role gives me plenty of opportunities to contribute meaningfully because I have ownership of my package and my decisions directly influence progress. I feel valued through the trust the team places in me and the support they provide, which makes it clear that my input genuinely matters.
How does your compensation package - including perks & benefits - fairly remunerate you for the work you do?
5/5
Subsistence - I am given around £1400/month to help pay for my temporary accommodation as well as food. I find this very helpful and it makes my circumstances possible.
Company car - I am given a company car to help me commute.
Travel allowance - I am given around 300/month to help with travelling expenses due to being far from home.
How well do you feel the role is preparing you for your future career?
5/5
The role is preparing me very well for my future career. Managing my own package gives me experience in planning, decision-making, and team management, while also providing valuable on-site exposure. Having experience on both ends is vital for understanding how everything comes together and why certain tasks are carried out on site. Overall, I feel this is accelerating my career, as not many people get the opportunity to run their own package early on.
How would you rate the extent to which you were developing new or existing skills through formal training and your day-to-day role?
4/5

Experience & Company Culture

How is the support you receive?
5/5
The support I received has been excellent. I've had multiple one-to-one meetings with my line manager and senior PM to discuss the support I need as well as what direction I wanted to take in regards to my career which was very useful and reassuring to me. I have also requested a mentor to help guide and support me throughout my graduate scheme, and my line manager arranged this quickly to ensure I was well supported.
How is your work-life balance?
4/5
My work-life week is balanced, I have time to pursue other activities after work and I don't feel physically or mentally fatigued.
What is the organisational culture, values and general atmosphere like?
5/5
The atmosphere is very positive and welcoming; everyone is willing to support and encourage you. You feel valued, and your opinions heard.
My role is site-based, so I am usually on site five days a week. However, I am given opportunities to work from home when needed. I travel between London and Hull every week, typically on Mondays and Fridays, and on Fridays I often finish early to allow enough time for the journey home. This allows me to have an undisturbed weekend.
How would you rate Balfour Beatty initiatives when it comes to equality, diversity, inclusion and accessibility?
4/5
Balfour Beatty is a very inclusive and diverse company to work for. They genuinely cater to everyone and treat all employees with fairness and respect. What stands out most to me is the way they take the initiative to support people’s individual needs, regardless of their background, culture, or religion. The company also makes thoughtful gestures throughout the year - such as bringing in cakes, desserts, and traditional foods - to celebrate important cultural and religious events. These small but meaningful actions create a welcoming environment where everyone feels valued and included.
How would you rate Balfour Beatty CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) initiatives?
4/5
I rate Balfour Beatty’s CSR initiatives highly. There are always opportunities to volunteer during working hours, and the activities are genuinely varied—from team beach clean-ups that support the environment to helping local schools clear vegetation to improve their playgrounds. Balfour Beatty also encourages volunteering outside of work by rewarding employees with two additional holiday days, which shows their strong commitment to supporting community and environmental impact.
