Communications Graduate Review

Since starting at Balfour Beatty the support I have had from the company has been excellent. Whether that be day to day operational support to development through the early careers pathway. If I have any questions on anything I feel I can turn to colleagues and directors straight away as I know everyone is keen to help with my development.

In my role I support project communications. This can include celebrating our successes on site and sharing news from our projects. It also includes the management of stakeholders and keeping members of the public informed of our works.

Throughout my time I have felt valued by the company and have been pleased to share my success. This is shared on internal platforms and there is also the opportunity to win prizes to spend on the high street.

For the work I do the company can recognise this through the benefits platform. This can include holiday purchases and discounts in retail. We have a whole platform where you can find available perks and benefits for a variety of different things.

A key aspect of the Early Career Pathway is to make sure we are all developing. Throughout the 2 years we have 8 modules to complete which helps us learn and better our understanding in our fields. There is a key focus on understanding working with your peers to help develop your career.

During my time here, I’ve felt well supported by my line manager, who provided regular check-ins and clear guidance on priorities. HR was helpful during onboarding and ensured I had access to all the necessary resources, though I would have appreciated more proactive communication about development opportunities. My mentor offered valuable insights into the role and shared practical advice, but structured sessions would have made the experience even stronger. Finally, my buddy was great at helping me settle in and answering day-to-day questions, although ongoing engagement beyond the first few weeks would have been beneficial.

Overall, my work-life balance has been positive, with a typical working week allowing me to manage both professional responsibilities and personal time effectively. Flexible working arrangements and clear expectations have supported my physical and mental wellbeing. However, there are occasional periods of high workload that make it challenging to fully disconnect, so continued focus on realistic deadlines and wellbeing initiatives would help maintain balance.

The organisational culture feels inclusive and welcoming, with a strong emphasis on collaboration and respect. The values are clearly communicated and reflected in day-to-day interactions, creating a positive atmosphere where people feel supported. Hybrid working policies offer flexibility, which helps maintain a healthy balance and demonstrates trust in employees. While the culture is generally positive, continuing to promote diversity and open communication will strengthen the sense of belonging even further.

Various events have taken place on site including world diversity week where everyone brought a dish in from their culture.
