Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
This role was based within EY's consulting branch, specifically in People consulting. The work was client -based, focusing on implementing Human Resource strategy to improve productivity and efficiency for all employees and HR systems. Each people consulting intern was assigned a project so we were fully immersed in the client meetings and everyday runnings of the team. My specific day-to-day would include a number of self-arranged 'connect' conversations to get to know people within the business as well as developing slides for presentations that would eventually go to the client. EY also enriched the learning experience by arranging talks with different parts of the business throughout the internships so that we had a broad range of exposure.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Yes, to an extent. The internship was only 4 weeks, but I got involved with so much more than I initially expected to. I think the responsibility you are given depends upon what you want from the experience. I knew I wanted to learn as much as possible, so I gave myself the responsibility of filling my calendar with meetings and connects with different teams and partners, so that I could in take as much information as possible in the short time. My team, specifically, did delegate me some tasks throughout my time so that I had a chance to input into meetings and give something back. This was great as I felt I had the opportunity to truly showcase my understanding and skillset whilst learning about the tangible work that goes on within project teams.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
Definitely both! I feel I came with an existing skillset that got utilised, like time management and communication, but I also learnt a low of new skills. For example, the client-based nature of the role was something completely new to me, so I learnt about how teams delegate between team and client responsibilities, how they manage that relationship, and how the performance has an cause/effect on the business unit as a whole.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
I felt truly supported during my time at EY. We were each given a direct counsellor, who was there to guide you in your career, make sure you were getting the most out of your experience and keeping tabs on your performance within your assigned project. This really helped me to understand what I wanted to do and tailor my experience to be as enjoyable as possible. You are also assigned a buddy. Your buddy is more of a 'friend', where you can discuss anything you're struggling with, ask the more silly questions (although no question is a silly one at EY!). This meant you were fully supported both personally and professionally and it felt like everyone you spoke to, really cares about your development and experience.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The company culture is extremely focused on inclusivity and community. As interns, we got to see monthly team connects that demonstrated how everyone comes together to share their wins and celebrate their work. My project specifically had wellbeing check in's once a week to ensure no one was over working compared to others in the team, and that responsibilities were being shared evenly. I was so impressed by the social opportunities available, such as sports and hobbies, that we were also invited to be a part of. The office in general has such a friendly feel, where everyone smiles as you walk through!

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
Overall, I loved it. I never expected to end up working in this area specifically, and my internship showed me a world of opportunity that I never knew was available. I believe EY is a company that actually cares about your graduate progression, they want you to do well and they want you to do well at EY. Each person I spoke to was so accommodating and friendly, it made my experience amazing. I wasn't sure I would gain so much from such a short time, but instead it has been transformative for my future. I would recommend it to anyone!
