Overall, how would you describe your experience at Balfour Beatty?
Joining Balfour Beatty as a graduate in September 2024 was the start of a truly transformative journey for me. From the outset, I was welcomed into a supportive and collaborative environment, where teamwork and personal growth are genuinely valued.
What are the main responsibilities of the role and which elements of the role do you enjoy the most?
Professionally, I had the chance to assist on significant projects and my responsibilities included organising meetings, managing deliverables, reviewing scope documents and raising technical queries.
To what extent does your role give you the opportunity to contribute meaningfully and feel valued by your team?

My role has offered me a wide variety of experiences, from technical projects to team-building activities which have taught me the value of a growth mindset, viewing setbacks and feedback as stepping stones to improvement. I found that the lessons learned during these activities translated directly into my work, helping me adapt to new situations and contribute more confidently to my team.

The culture at Balfour Beatty encourages stepping out of your comfort zone. I was able to take the lead on initiatives, sit with different teams to broaden my perspective, and attend webinars to improve my communication skills, which are all preparing me for my future career.
How would you rate the extent to which you were developing new or existing skills through formal training and your day-to-day role?

I would rate the extent of my skill development as very good, as my role combines structured formal training with substantial on-the-job learning. My day-to-day activities, such as shadowing senior engineering managers, have enhanced my ability to interpret technical drawings and actively contribute to design projects.

It’s a place where your voice matters, the support network is strong and your development is prioritised. For instance, when I faced challenges, like feeling out of place in early meetings before being assigned a project, I was supported by colleagues and managers who understood the learning curve involved.

My well being has been excellent, supported by the company’s strong focus on mental health awareness and confidential support services. In addition, guidance from managers and collaboration with colleagues have been invaluable. The organisation frequently hosts events that encourage interaction and foster a healthy work-life balance.
What is the organisational culture, values and general atmosphere like?

The company values everyone and strongly emphasises inclusion. The organisation encourages employees to perform at their best, which is also a clear commitment to mental health and well being and drives continuous improvement. It also creates a safe environment to work in and makes safety personal.

How would you rate Balfour Beatty CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) initiatives?

I would rate Balfour Beatty’s CSR initiatives as highly impactful., as for example every employee receives 16 hours of paid volunteering leave annually, enabling participation in activities like tree planting, litter picking, school engagement, and careers fairs. The company also collaborates with charities and schools to improve employment and social mobility.
