Graduate Quantity Surveyor Review

The experience overall has been both beneficial and enjoyable. Balfour Beatty offer extensive resources to developing your CPD, and enhance their expertise through working with highly skilled professionals. The experience has been rewarding as every day you are continuing to develop and learn, and pick up more responsibility along the way.

My experience so far as a Graduate Quantity Surveyor has been excellent, as i have had the opportunity to work on a PCSA for a few months and then was moved to a live job based in Edinburgh. Since joining the live job, i have been involved in all aspects of a QS's role, and now i am in the fortunate position to be managing my own Sub-Contractors on the job as well as assisting with client related work when required. The opportunity to pick up the load of work i have has allowed me to progress at a quicker rate and has been invaluable in my professional development.

The role allows me to contribute meaningfully as i have been trusted by my line manager to take on my own packages as my responsibility.

Overall i think Balfour Beatty offer a extensive range of benefits, however one that sticks out is the company car scheme which isn't much use for someone in my position. As a young graduate, and like many others i would imagine, i live in a flat which does not allow me to install an electric charger. The car list is heavily in the electric favor with minimal options for hybrid vehicles, and we are also not entitled to a cash allowance due to our grade.

My time on this job has been invaluable, i already feel in a confident position to deal with elements on my own and will continue to progress to the end of the project.

My line manager has been excellent from the day i started. He has always been attentive and explained elements in great detail to give me a great understanding. He has provided me with the platform to build confidence in the work i do by giving me responsibilities.

Generally not too bad, however the commute to Edinburgh can take up to 3 hours a day which is my personal time not working time. Despite that i still manage to fit in what i can after work.

Overall the inclusion from everyone at Balfour Beatty is outstanding, i have felt like a valued member of the team from the start.
