Overview of the Role

Overall, how would you describe your experience at BAE Systems?
Good so far and well supported - both teams so far have recognised I'm a Graduate and have provided a nice balance of training and support, as well as giving me responsibility and independence. The rotations provide a diverse view of the business, throwing me into different businesses that operate differently and hopefully when finishing the scheme, I'll have a thorough understanding of how finance works across each business enabling me to be a future leader.
What are the main responsibilities of the role and which elements of the role do you enjoy the most?
Rotation 1: Maritime Services and Subs - Finance Systems Role working as part of the Administration team that looks after SAP BPC.
Rotation 2: Naval Ships - Type 26 Project Analyst working as part of the Reporting Team which involves pulling together numbers and presenting these to the customer and senior leadership team in the company.
To what extent does your role give you the opportunity to contribute meaningfully and feel valued by your team?
5/5
In both my roles, I have been given lots of responsibility over the handling of key processes which has provided me with lots of development and learning. At the same time, it means i'm making an impact which my team recognise and gives me purpose.
How does your compensation package - including perks & benefits - fairly remunerate you for the work you do?
3/5
In terms of company benefits, there's not a lot to criticise given Flexi, Share Scheme, Study Days although I believe the company should recognise as Graduates who have been asked to relocate to different cities each year and therefore be provided proper support regarding relocation to ensure they don't have to balance too much a new job role alongside a lot of admin required as part of moving to a new house. It would be nice if they can also allow for some flexibility to allow for graduates who have had to move far to work from home on occasions where their family and friends live to ensure they can maintain relationships in their personal life.
How well do you feel the role is preparing you for your future career?
5/5
As graduates, we are thrown into different areas of the business with a completely different new role. There are elements we take from a previous role that can benefit the new role, but there's a whole lot of new learning that needs to be done. By the time we exit the scheme, we should have a very broad view of different businesses within the company to enable us to be future leaders.
How would you rate the extent to which you were developing new or existing skills through formal training and your day-to-day role?
4/5
Day-to-day role provides a lot of opportunity to develop skills and there are a lot of independent work for a graduate to be doing outside of the job role i.e., CIMA. However, organised formal training bar personal effectiveness and formal training focussed on finance is somewhat limited.

Experience & Company Culture

How is the support you receive?
4/5
Lots of support provided from Line Managers as they are fully aware of the Graduate Scheme and their responsibilities as Managers to develop us - the company promotes Mentorship and Buddies as well. As Graduates who have been recruited to be future leaders, it would be good to see more effort at a higher level i.e., Senior Leadership Teams, to build a relationship with us so we can learn what it takes to get to that level.
How is your work-life balance?
3/5
Whilst Flexi is great and enables Work/Life balance, the company does not recognise a lot of the sacrifices a lot of graduates make by moving by themselves to a new city each year and makes it hard to maintain relationships back home. I am in support of the policy to work at least 3 days a week in the office but would be nice for graduates to be given some leeway to facilitate working from home in their hometowns as it will not impact work but mean they can still be close to family/friends on certain occasions.
What is the organisational culture, values and general atmosphere like?
5/5
Overall, whilst work can get stressful due to the nature, the company does promote the importance of having a personal life and Flexi does promote this. Everyone is welcoming upon joining a new team at least from my perspective and are on hand to support and provide training.
How would you rate BAE Systems initiatives when it comes to equality, diversity, inclusion and accessibility?
5/5
How would you rate BAE Systems CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) initiatives?
4/5

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BAE Systems to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Overall, the culture is really positive, you feel supported and at the same time get given lots of responsibility. Knowing other companies, Flexi is a massive bonus and everyone in general feels to have a sense of purpose.
How well did the role match your expectations based on the recruitment process?
4/5
Job role as stated provides you with different experiences and different perspectives of such a big organisation but myself and a lot of others felt quite a bit misled from the Job Role saying location was Flexible. Whilst I have always been prepared to move about and therefor less affected, so might have read this as Flexible in terms of Remote Working and were nto as prepared to make such a big change.
When considering the recruitment & onboarding process, have you any specific tips or advice you would give to others applying to BAE Systems?
Understand the business and the different business units within it and their role in the wider world i.e., Air, Naval Ships, DI etc.
