Overview of the Role

Overall, how would you describe your experience at BAE Systems?
So far my experience at the company has been enjoyable and everyone I have worked with is nice and inclusive. The grad scheme I am on however hasn't provided me with the benefits I thought it would especially in comparison with the level work we do for the pay.
What are the main responsibilities of the role and which elements of the role do you enjoy the most?
My main role is a software engineer developing future concepts. I really enjoy the role as it is both challenging and engaging.
To what extent does your role give you the opportunity to contribute meaningfully and feel valued by your team?
5/5
The work that I have done has all felt like it is contributing towards the end goal of the projects and other members in the team all seem to appreciate the work that I contribute.
How does your compensation package - including perks & benefits - fairly remunerate you for the work you do?
2/5
In my opinion the scheme is one of the higher paying schemes around. However, after speaking to other colleagues and discussing the work that I do, I feel that the pay is below where it should be. One solution I heard was that when the scheme used to move grads around they used to be opportunities for pay increases when they move, but now we are on a fixed pay until the end of the scheme which I feel isn't representative of our work.
How well do you feel the role is preparing you for your future career?
5/5
The work that I am doing I feel is very much what I would want to be doing in the future and is allowing me to grow and develop my understanding with the support of other members of my team around me.
How would you rate the extent to which you were developing new or existing skills through formal training and your day-to-day role?
3/5
I haven't received a lot of formal training, a lot of what I have developed has been through trial and error and being pointed in the roughly correct way and then allow to develop my learning. Which I have quite enjoyed.

Experience & Company Culture

How is the support you receive?
5/5
Nearly any question I ask to either my line manager or team members gets answered instantly or they go out of their way to find the answer.
How is your work-life balance?
4/5
I find the flexi-time quite nice and it allows you to choose when you would like to start and finish, my only complaint is that I live quite far from site and with the majority of my work being on site. Travelling to and from work can be frustrating but I knew about this when joining and don't find it overall too bad.
What is the organisational culture, values and general atmosphere like?
5/5
With me being based mainly onsite I get to see most people in the office everyday and it is a nice community, everyone likes to have a laugh and joke and look after each other which I enjoy.
How would you rate BAE Systems initiatives when it comes to equality, diversity, inclusion and accessibility?
5/5
Personally I haven't had any issues with feeling excluded but this also means I cant comment on how they would handle this.
How would you rate BAE Systems CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) initiatives?
4/5
They do offer support for volunteering but from what I can gather it is only for charities they support. When speaking to friends they get volunteering days of for the same charity I support and it would be nice if something like this could be support. Overall though, the company pushes environmental support as well as community support.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BAE Systems to a friend?
Yes
Why?
The company as a whole has been nice to work for the and the incentives are nice, I would just suggest joining early and making use of the apprentice scheme which allows you a degree, debt free, or join the company direct.
How well did the role match your expectations based on the recruitment process?
5/5
I joined exactly into a software role which is what I applied for.
When considering the recruitment & onboarding process, have you any specific tips or advice you would give to others applying to BAE Systems?
When in onboarding and joining the company be confident but ask questions, everyone is aware you are new and that you won't know everything, and they will be more than happy to help.
