Overview of the Role

Overall, how would you describe your experience at BAE Systems?
Overall, has been a whirlwind of a first year - which has absolutely flown. I have been lucky to find both supportive department, team, and manager and feel I have agency of my own work and time. I would say that more than half of the people I know at work on scheme feel the same. Although you do have to reach for them yourself, there are some amazing opportunities that I have had at work. Would definitely recommend as a graduate scheme.
What are the main responsibilities of the role and which elements of the role do you enjoy the most?
I have landed in a job a little different than I expected - looking more at the "armchair engineering" side of things but despite spending a long time on Excel this has not stopped me from visiting various company and non-company sites, partaking in group activity with the other graduates, meeting all sorts of people from a variety of backgrounds both on scheme and off scheme and thoroughly enjoying my job. If you are happy to go and search for the action, then this role is for you.
To what extent does your role give you the opportunity to contribute meaningfully and feel valued by your team?
5/5
I am very lucky to have an incredible team that allow me to make the best difference I can make. I commonly hold meetings with people far above my pay and yet still feel respected in the room when I do. On the whole, the corporate atmosphere here is a positive one - if a little slow at times - but definitely very very welcome!
How does your compensation package - including perks & benefits - fairly remunerate you for the work you do?
5/5
From when I looked at roles, the one thing that stood out here was the role's perks and benefits, and this has not disappointed. BAEs look after their employees well, with good perks through all sorts of channels, including all of the important ones, with extra optional available perks for those that are interested.
How well do you feel the role is preparing you for your future career?
5/5
Their development and career options are second to none. They offer skills coaches with "Personal Effectiveness" sessions that I wished I had had on day one of university - with access to a dedicated Early Careers team, support from Qualified coaches, mentoring schemes and more. If the role you end up doing is not the one you want, rest assured that the role does exist within the company and if you have the drive you will be able to access it.
How would you rate the extent to which you were developing new or existing skills through formal training and your day-to-day role?
5/5
As I am incredibly lucky to have a supportive department, and a supportive and proactive development lead, I feel very well supported to take further training. The role I am doing is not the one I applied to do, but I have since taken professionally recognised external qualifications such that I am now confident in my ability to undertake my role.

Experience & Company Culture

How is the support you receive?
5/5
MY support has been incredible! BUT I would like to take a second to highlight that this is not always the case. You must be ready to fight your corner - but given the right people you should be supported at this company. Early Careers is also always on hand to offer the support you might need - with the help at this specific site being incredible also and recognised as such within the company.
How is your work-life balance?
5/5
My department encourages flexible working and as such I am able to work where I please. The company's implementation of "flexible working hours" is great and within reason allows me to work when I please without feeling micromanaged. Their working hours are fair, and allow me to do the best I can.
What is the organisational culture, values and general atmosphere like?
3/5
The culture is positive, and is including, but it moves MUCH slower than other companies I have worked at - including those that are much larger. This has been my only sticking point throughout this process where I do find that I can become frustrated with this at times, but on the whole that this is still a positive thing overall.
How would you rate BAE Systems initiatives when it comes to equality, diversity, inclusion and accessibility?
5/5
I have not observed any glaring issues in my personal experience.
How would you rate BAE Systems CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) initiatives?
5/5
The links that the Early Careers team have with local schools, and schemes such as the STEM scheme have been vital and have allowed me to spend time undertaking outreach as part of my role - which I consider an important part of CPD.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BAE Systems to a friend?
Yes
Why?
The overall impact of this job on my life has been an incredibly positive one and I find that I wake up and am happy to go to work when I do. I feel that I am listened to, and respected, and these are the most important part about this job.
How well did the role match your expectations based on the recruitment process?
1/5
Utterly different (but not necessarily a bad thing). I applied believing I had applied for a "Computer Science Systems Engineering Integration Engineer" and this was not the case at all. BAEs placed me in an entirely different role but after a few months of turmoil and deciding if I wanted to continue in role (as moving was an option) I decided to stick at it and am very happy that I have.
When considering the recruitment & onboarding process, have you any specific tips or advice you would give to others applying to BAE Systems?
The recruitment process is slow, and vague. Do your best. Sell yourself as much as you can - and don't downplay the importance of the skills tests/games that you may be invited to play. The hire process is not always reflective of the final role. Fight your corner, and do your best. Also, I did struggle to contact during the hiring process by both email and phone, but they (on the whole) do ring you about once every couple of months as the hiring process can be lengthy to check in which was a nice touch.
