Environmental Sustainability Graduate Review

I joined Balfour Beatty on the graduate scheme in 2023. The graduate scheme is structured around 6 core modules that span across 2 years. Each module focuses on a Balfour Beatty value. I really enjoyed the graduate scheme as it allowed me to understand the business better( including its structure, values, and ethos) and allowed me to meet many other early career individuals.
I think the best part of the Balfour Beatty graduate scheme is the in person experiential module that takes place in the Lake District. This allowed for early career individuals to meet up face-to-face and to take part in various outdoor activities that us feeling better connected and empowered.
Outside of the formal graduate scheme Balfour Beatty supported me in my transition from university into the work place and I felt properly supported to integrated in my first corporate role.

I work in the Group Reporting team which includes uploading quarterly carbon data into our reporting software, supporting with year end sustainability audits, and supporting CDP submissions.
I really enjoy the creative freedom I have to bring forward new ideas, kickstart new initiatives, and collaborate with the wider team.

Balfour Beatty have a platform called MyC (My Contribution) which allows all colleagues to submit new ideas that help to improve the business. This platform really helped me to feel as though I had a voice int he company and I was bale to meaningfully contribute new ideas to the business. Submitting new ideas is seen as a very valuable thing by my team and by the wider business.

There is a benefits portal including gym discounts, shopping discounts, and health and dental packages.

I feel as though this role has helped me to take the first step into my career in sustainability. I was supported to learn about the business, sustainability and how to integrate into a corporate environment. All of which I believe is preparing me for my future career.

At Balfour Beatty hybrid working is flexible for my role which has helped me to maintain a really good work life balance. The company also offer benefits, including gym discounts etc which promote physical wellbeing. My team are very supportive and do not encourage working outside of contracted hours which helps to maintain a work life balance.

Balfour Beatty have various affinity networks (including Gender + Allies, Multi-cultural and the Abilities network) which fosters and inclusive culture at the company. Overall I think Balfour Beatty is an inclusive and welcoming company to work for.

Balfour Beatty has mandatory Right to Respect training which teaches all colleges how to treat everyone with respect.
