Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

- speech and language therapy placement in a neuro setting in the community
-visiting patients in the community with dysphagia and communication needs
-Carrying out observations and assessments and recommending next steps to the patient or their NOK or the MDT
-writing clinical notes using database respecting confidentiality

- It varied dependent on service but I did independently carry out assessments

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

From university I'd say we received some support but it could have been improved in certain aspects
Support/guidance depended on the clinician, I personally benefitted from supportive clinicians in both year 1 and year 2 of placement

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

This varied, I didn't feel it was very cohesive. General atmosphere was friendly but lacked cohesiveness.

I enjoy it when I feel supported and have a line-manager who is interested in supporting me and not giving the impression it's a task they have to follow.

What advice would you give to others applying to NHS

- Be flexible in your approach to patients and in managing workload
-Be proactive in asking questions to your line-manager
-Expect different scenarios from patients
- Be inquisitive and open to learning
