Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
Rehabbing patients who had had plastic surgery (mostly breast reconstruction, but lots of other injuries/illnesses that had required skin grafts/flaps as part of treatment) and burns patients.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Yes. From about week 2 I had my own breast reconstruction patients. However for the more complex patients I tended to have a second person with me. I had responsibility over writing notes, however these had to be checked and countersigned by my supervisor

Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
Yes! I didn’t know anything about plastic surgery or burns prior to this placement.
I learned about recovery and how to teach deep breathing exercises and flat bed transfers.
I learned about the dangling protocol and how to implement this.
I saw 4 surgeries and this gave me a much deeper understanding of anatomy and exactly why people are in pain.
I became better about having difficult conversations with patients eg regarding their cancer diagnosis, or life changing injuries
