Overview of the Role

Overall, how would you describe your experience at Balfour Beatty?
It has provided me with necessary trainings and support to ensure I am in the best position moving forward within my career. Considering Balfour Beatty is a large company, I feel I have been able to network with many people from across the business around the country, building important connections for the future.
What are the main responsibilities of the role and which elements of the role do you enjoy the most?
Technical writing and reviewing, calculations, logistics, planning, document control and managing certain scopes of the project.
To what extent does your role give you the opportunity to contribute meaningfully and feel valued by your team?
4/5
I have certainly been given a lot of responsibilities, though I sometimes feel hesitation from subcontractors or members of the wider team in my ability knowing that I am a graduate.
How does your compensation package - including perks & benefits - fairly remunerate you for the work you do?
5/5
The option to get a company vehicle, expenses paid for travel, food and accommodation when working away from home. Many additional options such as more days holiday and private healthcare too.
How well do you feel the role is preparing you for your future career?
4/5
On the whole working for a company like Balfour Beatty ensures I am experience top level training and working with some of the best in the business. The only downside at this stage is working on a project where my scope is in the distant future, meaning my time on site has been limited. I have taken it upon myself to move teams into more of a delivery role to ensure I can get the site experience, considering I am working for a contracting firm!
How would you rate the extent to which you were developing new or existing skills through formal training and your day-to-day role?
5/5
Ensuring I follow the Balfour Beatty 70/20/10 method to ensure I am doing enough of my daily role, but also getting involved in a plethora of training courses. This will be improved further once I am on site learning new skills.

Experience & Company Culture

How is the support you receive?
5/5
HR Business Partners are easily accessible and respond quickly, my line manager was always on hand for quick questions and monthly catch ups - helped more by being present in the office. I also have mentors regarding working towards my chartership.
How is your work-life balance?
4/5
What is the organisational culture, values and general atmosphere like?
3/5
My specific project is an alliance, meaning there are a range of different parent companies involved. The atmosphere has certainly improved over time. The organisational structure of Balfour Beatty has recently changed which can sometimes lead to some confusion.
How would you rate Balfour Beatty initiatives when it comes to equality, diversity, inclusion and accessibility?
5/5
The company consistently speak out on all of these initiatives. There are affinity groups that people can get involved with, as well as calls, webinars and events. Its great to see the affinity networks presence at Early Careers events too.
How would you rate Balfour Beatty CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) initiatives?
5/5
Balfour Beatty allow up to two days volunteering a year for employees. On my project there are initiatives for the local community that we are working in. Environmental impact and sustainability are at the forefront of how we work as a business - and something I am particularly passionate about.

Recommendations & Advice

Yes
Why?
The training, types of projects to get involved with and community feel of the company.
How well did the role match your expectations based on the recruitment process?
4/5
Slightly different to what I had expected from working on a Nationally significant infrastructure project.
When considering the recruitment & onboarding process, have you any specific tips or advice you would give to others applying to Balfour Beatty?
Just be yourself, as the recruiters and employers within the business are not looking for one type of individual. The diversity of our teams in the business is what helps us succeed on projects and improves team collaboration.
