Overview of the Role

Overall, how would you describe your experience at Balfour Beatty?
My experience with Balfour Beatty has been entirely positive. When I started I was placed on a 2 year graduate programme which offers training courses and early career support. I have taken part in many exciting events and also had the opportunity to attend two 1 week residentials in the lake district with other graduates and apprentices. I feel well supported by Balfour Beatty and would recommend getting a graduate role here.
What are the main responsibilities of the role and which elements of the role do you enjoy the most?
The responsibilities of a Materials Engineer varies slightly with each project and can include Earthworks, Concrete, Contaminated Land, Pavements and Tunnelling. This is a mixture of on site, in lab, and office working. Some of my responsibilities include...
On site:
Material Inspections - Assessing imported and site won materials for quality and compliance with required specifications.
Field Testing - Performing and/or supervising geotechnical tests such as HSVs and NDGs.
Sampling - Collecting material samples for geotechnical and chemical lab testing for quality control.
In-Office:
Data Analysis - Interpreting lab test results and field data to inform decisions.
Technical Reporting - writing MMPs and conducting audits to demonstrate compliance and showcase progress.
Carbon training - Improving my carbon literacy to understand how to reduce carbon production in different construction phases and products.
I enjoy all of the responsibilities outlined above.
To what extent does your role give you the opportunity to contribute meaningfully and feel valued by your team?

How does your compensation package - including perks & benefits - fairly remunerate you for the work you do?

Company car is a great benefit of the role. The £28,000 salary was when I started in 2023. There are bi-annual salary reviews for the 2 years during and 2 years after the graduate programme.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Balfour Beatty to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I have enjoyed working at Balfour Beatty.
How well did the role match your expectations based on the recruitment process?
4/5
Since this was my first graduate role out of university, I wasn't 100% sure what to expect for a job in construction.
When considering the recruitment & onboarding process, have you any specific tips or advice you would give to others applying to Balfour Beatty?
Be willing to work both on site and in the office (at least for my role)
