Overview of the Role

Overall, how would you describe your experience at Unilever?
My experience is good overall. You are given impactful work from your first day supported by the training and mentorship to enable you to do it. The culture is very high performance and you are expected to do your work, excel at Unilever's behaviours and complete CIMA while on the scheme.
What are the main responsibilities of the role and which elements of the role do you enjoy the most?
The roles vary a lot and each year you rotate to a role that exposes you to a gap in your learning that the last had. You will cover all areas of your function in the UFLP. I have really enjoyed getting to drive automation in my first role and then move to a local role being involved in strategic decisions about our business.
To what extent does your role give you the opportunity to contribute meaningfully and feel valued by your team?
5/5
At Unilever I have found very little hierarchy and you are valued from day one, a vice president might ask your opinion and it will be listened to. Contribution is expected as part of being a UFLP.
How does your compensation package - including perks & benefits - fairly remunerate you for the work you do?
3/5
Unilever does not pay exceptionally highly, they have given us a mid rotation pay increase to adjust to market pay but for living in London it is not a lot of money. However, the other benefits are very good, the pension is generous along with private healthcare.
How well do you feel the role is preparing you for your future career?
4/5
I would never have been able to pick up the range of experience in this amount of time without being a UFLP, unfortunately I worry if it will be worthwhile as there are limited roles at the end of the scheme. They are cutting back how many UFLPs they are taking on but this is too late for my year.
How would you rate the extent to which you were developing new or existing skills through formal training and your day-to-day role?
4/5
You had residential training courses, a mentor, your line manager, and a team who will support you. Havent met someone who wouldnt help me if I asked a genuine question.

Experience & Company Culture

How is the support you receive?
3/5
In terms of the formal support, I have spoken to my buddy once and never again. I find my mentor tricky to work with and HR is distant. But the informal team you build I find very supportive.
How is your work-life balance?
3/5
I have regularly worked past midnight for month end close days in a row. Some managers can be quite unkind and have made me cry in the office the emotion of which then drags into homelife. On the other hand there are some exceptional people there and they are the reason I havent quit the company.
What is the organisational culture, values and general atmosphere like?
3/5
Very much dislike the new performance culture that is being brought into the company. Hybrid is great through and they give you money to set up your work from home systems.
How would you rate Unilever initiatives when it comes to equality, diversity, inclusion and accessibility?
5/5
Senior leaders are very clear, good people get put into good roles. Therefore they want good diverse talent, which means equity in the recruitment and training programs.
How would you rate Unilever CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) initiatives?
3/5
We are a leader but still one of the biggest plastic polluters in the world.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Unilever to a friend?
Yes
Why?
While there are some tricky parts to managing the scheme, very few other top 100 companies have their head office in the UK, it gives a amazing range of roles to develop from. But in tern it is very intense at times.
How well did the role match your expectations based on the recruitment process?
5/5
I was a placement student so have experience with what it was like, felt it is clearly communicated.
When considering the recruitment & onboarding process, have you any specific tips or advice you would give to others applying to Unilever?
Get to know our products, walk down the supermarket and turn a few items around, figure out who makes what and why you are drawn to pick up a particular product.
