Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

As part of the highways team, my main task was to create CAD drawings using Civil3D and OpenRoads Concepstation. I also worked on 2 intern projects: a 3D printing project and a road alignment design. There would have meetings in the morning to track progress and get feedback and I would spend most of my time working independently on CAD.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

Not really, as the work I did - while aligned with real project tasks - was mainly for learning purposes and not intended for use in the actual projects.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

I developed my existing technical skills on CAD software such as AutoCAD while I also was exposed to new software's such as Civil3D and OpenRoads. These tools were unfamiliar to me at the start of the placement and through the help of team members and the companies eLearning I was able to develop a strong skillset in CAD. I also developed numerous soft skills through interacting with new people everyday ranging from new interns to senior managers.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

I received a lot of support throughout my internship - mainly from the younger team members and 'work buddies'. I would have formal catchups every other day to track progress with informal guidance happening almost daily.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

Very friendly and relaxed atmosphere with all company members being happy to help and chat with you. Despite the office being very quiet at times, there was still a nice culture.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?

Overall I enjoyed the internship as I was able to learn new skills, experience being part of a professional team and attend socials with coworkers. However, there were times where the workload was light and work could get quite boring.

What advice would you give to others applying to Arcadis

Be friendly and outgoing. Its more about being able to get along with the team rather than having extensive technical knowledge. Show a passion to want to learn new things
