COO Investments Intern Review

As a COO Intern within the Cash, FX, and Collateral team, I’ve supported operational processes by analysing overdrafts, assisting with day-to-day tasks, and contributing to broader efficiency initiatives. My role has involved attending meetings, communicating with custodians and colleagues, and taking ownership of independent tasks that add value to the team. This experience has given me insight into how operational teams function within a financial institution and how small improvements can have a meaningful impact.

I was given substantial responsibility from early on in the internship, which allowed me to see the real impact I could have on both the business and the Cash, FX, and Collateral team. I was trusted to take ownership of meaningful tasks and was invited to attend important meetings, where I could contribute to discussions and gain insight into operational decision-making.

During my internship, I developed a range of new skills - from learning to use unfamiliar software required for specific operational tasks to improving soft skills such as typing and professional communication. I also took the initiative to independently study VBA, which allowed me to automate repetitive processes and contribute more efficiently to the team.

This aspect of the internship was definitely a highlight. The support I received was consistent, thorough, and genuinely encouraging. At no point did I feel uncomfortable asking for help, and I was always made to feel like a valued member of the team. The culture at aberdeen is incredibly warm and welcoming, which made it easy to learn, grow, and contribute with confidence.

The company thrives on a collaborative and inclusive culture, which was a key highlight of my internship experience. There’s a strong sense of unity and support across teams, and I always felt welcomed and encouraged to contribute.

I genuinely enjoyed my internship and found it to be a valuable learning experience. While there were moments of challenge and adjustment, they helped me grow and better understand the realities of working in a professional environment.
