Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

I was interning in the Client group of the internship split across 2 teams within the client governance area and also the strategic insurance team. My roles in governance involved overseeing client data and also resolving any alerts related to financial crime and screening. My work in the SIG team involved researching Belgian and Dutch insurance markets for an account planning.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

I was given lots of responsibility and trust which I really liked and surprised me. However, it was never overbearing, and the team was very supportive and nurturing.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

Lots of support and guidance. I had regular 1 to 1s with my placement manager. My stream head who oversaw my programme was also incredibly helpful and nurturing. Furthermore, the early talent team was incredible in setting up structured learning and development sessions which really boosted my confidence and soft skills.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

The culture is very welcoming, supportive and nurturing. Everyone is so collaborative and open to have a chat and give a hand when you're struggling. It's incredible welcoming and especially important coming in as an intern, it really helped me hit the ground running.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?

I enjoyed every single part of my placement. The actual work and projects I worked on were incredibly rewarding and really aligned to my interests. It was fantastic to come in everyday to a place where everyone really values development of early talent and is so open to give a hand and take the time to support your learning.

What advice would you give to others applying to Aberdeen

Aberdeen offers such a diverse range of opportunities, particularly for those who, like me, are just starting their careers. These involve grad programmes, internships and trainee programmes along with apprenticeships. With such a diverse range of opportunities which are all fantastic and each offer a plethora of opportunities to learn and gain an insight into the asset management industry. My piece of advice is to be look through these options carefully to see which opportunities are right for you and best suits your style of learning/ current academic or professional career level.
