Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

I completed an internship within Aberdeen's Finance division, primarily working in the UK Financial Reporting team. The role involved supporting financial reporting activities, analysing financial data, assisting with reconciliations and contributing to projects that helped improve team processes. Alongside my day-to-day responsibilities, I also worked on an automation project using SharePoint, Power Automate and Office Scripts to make reporting processes more efficient.
My day-to-day work involved working with financial data, supporting reporting activities, investigating variances and collaborating with colleagues across the team. I regularly used Excel and other finance systems while developing my analytical and problem-solving skills. I also met with stakeholders to understand business requirements and design automated solutions to improve existing processes.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

Yes. I was trusted with meaningful work that contributed directly to the team's objectives rather than only administrative tasks. I was given ownership of my automation project from design through to delivery and handover, while also contributing to ongoing reporting activities. I was encouraged to take initiative, build relationships across the business and take ownership of my personal development throughout the internship.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

Yes. During my internship I developed both technical and professional skills. From a technical perspective, I strengthened my understanding of financial reporting processes, reconciliations, variance analysis and financial systems, while also improving my Excel skills. I also learned how to use SharePoint, Power Automate and Office Scripts to develop automation solutions and improve existing processes.
Alongside this, I developed a range of soft skills including communication, stakeholder management, networking, presentation skills and time management. Through working with colleagues across different teams and seniority levels, I became more confident in building professional relationships and taking ownership of my work.

I thoroughly enjoyed my internship at Aberdeen. Professionally, I had the opportunity to work on meaningful projects, develop new skills and build relationships with colleagues across the business. Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Aberdeen to a friend?

Yes

What advice would you give to others applying to Aberdeen

My advice would be to make the most of every opportunity available. Be proactive in asking questions, volunteering for projects and networking with colleagues across the business. The internship provides exposure to a wide range of teams and experienced professionals, so taking the initiative to build connections and learn from others can really enhance the experience.
I'd also encourage applicants to step outside their comfort zone and take advantage of the wider experience. Relocating to Scotland gave me the opportunity to explore Edinburgh and some of Scotland's stunning scenery and attractions. Combining these experiences with the professional development gained during the internship made it a particularly rewarding and memorable summer.
